Since noone had made one, I felt a topic about how awesome DOOM is was needed.
So yeah, it's pretty much the best FPS ever, right? Over 10 years and it STILL has wads coming out for it. And no other FPS has yet to reach its level of simplistic fun. Hell, only Half-Life 2 even comes close. And even THAT misses the mark slightly.
Also, if you have DOOM, and don't play it online, try Zdaemon. It's like a source port thingy that lets you play DOOM online with people and shit. The only thing is that you need the DOOM game files. LuckIly, My computEr Was equIpped with the REal thing a while ago (DOOM classic collection FTW!), if you haven't got DOOM yet, you should.
http://www.zdaemon.org/ [zdaemon.org] - Go here, download Zdaemon, and play DOOM online.
My SN on there is Azaoth. Post your SN if you decide to join.

DOOM - The best FPS ever? DEFINITELY!

That's pretty awesome. But it wouldn't have the endless amount of user made levels that the PC version has...

I would have to disagree. I got bored of Doom, but Quake had massive multiplayer appeal and a crapload of mods that actually added fun and interesting concepts to the game. Doom was just a more advanced version of Castle Wolfenstein. It gave the illusion of 3D by adding a little depth, but still kept the same core gameplay and concept as it's primitive precursor. The engine couldn't even support overlapping map segments.

DOOM isn't about mind blowing technology or graphics. It's about fast paced and non-stop killing. It doesnt hurt that the multiplayer is extremely balanced, even by todays standards.
Quake was a lot different than DOOM. Sure it IS a very good game, but it just doesn't do it for me. The levels and enemies aren't as memorable as DOOM's, and therefore Quake doesn't stick with me as much.
But then again, if you look at the two side-by-side, it's obvious DOOM has aged much better than Quake. While I like the look and feel of Quake, I don't think it has the same endearing appearance and gameplay that DOOM always will.
And Castle Wolfenstein was awesome too. Just not as awesome as DOOM.

I found the opposite to be true. I thought Doom was less memorable. The stages kind of blend together and there wasn't nearly as much thought put behind level design or enemy placement. Some people thought Doom was a very tense game when it came out, but I thought Quake did a much better job of creating the kind of tension people talked about, but I never saw in Doom. Plus Quake actually took the FPS genre into 3D. Height, distance, and direction mattered far more than in Doom. Before then, games were still essentially 2D games with a 3D presentation.

Doom always gave me migraine headaches... Maybe it was a combination of the flickering refresh rate, frame rate (or whatever), and the awful monotonos shades of grey and pinky-red that the whole thing consisted of...
It STILL does it to me even now!
I never had the same trouble with Duke Nukem 3D though. That had a lot of longevity, a lot of player mods/wads etc, and I liked it's bawdy humour; less serious than dour DOOOOOOM.
I wouldn't dispute that DOOM was a good game though, a hell of a lot of people loved it and it had a massive following- Although quite a bit of that was due to the titanic fan hype the game had when it came out, and not entirely because of the qualities of the game itself.

Nightmare ZeroThere's not much difference between the DOOM1 and 2... In fact They're pretty much the same thing, so that's a silly question! Obviously they're taking about the first Doomy-doomDOOM (1 or 2), and NOT doom3 because it only came out about one or two years ago.
which Doom are we talking about? 1, 2,or 3?
Besides the real 'sequal' to DOOM was Quake.

Doom was the first time I ever experienced a deathmatch. It was so exhilirating back then... My friend had hijacked two computers at the school library to play serial-linked Doom. It didn't last long. I've never had a FPS deathmatch feel that fun ever since, simply because of the nostalgia effect.
There's also something about the weapons balance, lighting-quick action, and simple physics that really made it feel good, though.

Oh man, Computer Graphics, Freshman year. Doom was CRAZY! All the computers are in a network at school, so all we needed was to get Doom hidden in certain places on our accounts and we could play all we wanted. It was intense.

Damn, I thought I was the only one who put DOOM on my school PCs back in highschool. Yeah, it is pretty badass playing DOOM instead of typing your book report.

i think rich emphasizes the FUN factors of the game and isukun emphasizes the TECHNICAL aspects of the game. I have seen these kind of discussions before and they tend to go long and long and long.

BINGO! Fun over flash!
I didn't find the game as fun because of the technical aspects. It didn't do anything new. Even when the game first came out I was kind of disappointed that it didn't really advance the genre beyond what Wolfenstein was already doing. It was all flash, no substance.

So in wasn't fun because it didn't redefine all the technical aspects of the genre?
Sorry dude, but if you're playing games just for technical aspects, you aren't a real gamer. Games are supposed to be played for fun, not to look at pretty graphics.

If I was like Isukun, I wouldn't still be loving Lucasarts adventure games and Metal Slug.
Not loving those games should be considered a crime against humanity.

Which was my point exactly. If you read my posts, you might see that. I found Doom boring because all it did was improve the graphics.

Most people who like Metal Slug will admit the later games aren't as good as the earlier games. Lucasarts adventure games changed over time to add new and interesting elements to their games as well as different stories and humor. The Lucasarts adventure games were mostly about the story, anyway.

Not everything needs to innovate to be considered amazing. Look at Call of Duty. It was basically the same thing as Medal of Honor, only bigger. And yet, Call of Duty is still one of the best games ever made.

Someone who wants more than a shallow experience. To me, Marathon is just as fun as Doom and even did many things better. I mean, fer crissakes, in Doom I killed a demon with a shotgun from 50 feet away! While that may be entertaining to some, it took me right out of the game.

Halo
Now you must pay for your shallow tastes.
Don't get me wrong, Halo was good game, mainly because it took advantage of the X-Box controller.
It's definately not the best FPS ever.
