Does Your Family Care About Webcomics Milestones?

I am guessing it's not just me, but in general, most of my family members don't get too excited when I hit a webcomics milestone (like today, hit 500). I mean they say congratulations, but I am finding that if webcomics aren't deep in a person's realm of activity, then the person really doesn't care. This includes family.

Is that what you all have found?

i don't really care about milestones overmuch myself.

and in your case, 500 isn't all that impressive. it's just.....not that good. you should go into news strips instead!

I'm very close with my family and usually they are interested in the things I do.

They haven't read my comic (my family isn't into comics at all, except for my dad, but he haven't read a comic since Batman/Superman: Absolute Power), but when I told them that Shaman Quest was nominated for the Drunk Duck Award for Best 3D/Poser Comic, they congratulated me and seemed really suportive.

They know that making comics is my passion and that try to do a print comic in my country is impossible, so they understand how important this is to me and have told me that as long as I'm happy, they're happy. Of course, the fact that I have a daytime job to support myself is a relief for them...

However, my step-mom and my dad have asked my if there is any real chance of profit whith my webcomic...

My family doesn't know about my webcomic.

And I'm moving this to Comics Discussion, where it is better suited.

Is it just me, or is that needlessly rude.?

Congratulations joey :)

Friends and family know I have a comic, but a milestone wouldn't matter to them... I mean, if I was happy about it, they might be happy for me, but it wouldn't be something they'd really click with. But that's like anything really. I don't get all the stuff my dad, sister, mum or other friends are into, if they tell me about something they've achieved within their field that makes them happy I can be happy for them but I won't really fully get what it means to them- only that it means something. :)

My former roommates do. They helped me create it. We had parties back when we shared a house. (We used to come up with any excuse for a party. We celebrated Celtic holidays, Japanese holidays, Canadian holidays...)

My family probably wouldn't care. I don't tell them anyway. They know I have a couple comics and tell their friends I'm talented, but I don't think they've even looked at my stuff.

My mother thinks I'm stopped with the whole webcomic thing over a year ago. After watching her furrow her brow over Schizophrenia Bloom, I had no need or want to let her in on AG. In practice, she doesn't concern herself with anything I do, so I don't see a reason to open the floodgate of disappointment. 'No one cares' is a way of life around here, not just some pithy statement.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or
lose, it will be fine. You pretend to be Zen. You adopt detachment, and
ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

My sisters read my comic from time to time. There are character interactions that are clearly inspired by some of the things they've done and I think they find that flattering but my parents don't really care and the few times in my life that my Dad actually has seen my art he just seemed very confused by it as if he didn't understand and shred of it.

I don't bother to tell my family about milestones. They know I'm working on the comic and they occasionally ask how near I am to the end (yes, it does have an end and it is in sight!) But milestones are too "relative" to mean much to anyone but the creator.

1,000 pages of a comic which only has one panel per page, for example, is usually going to be less of an achievement than 1,000 pages of a full blown story with five or six panels per page. Similarly 1,000 pages of two stick figures talking is (in most cases) going to be less of an achievement than 1,000 pages of something with superbly drawn, full colour art like Purgatory Tower or Pinky TA.

Milestones can be great psychological boosts for us all on a personal level, but I'm really not sure they mean anything to anyone else. Which is probably the way it should be!

Well, in joey's case it seems a little more strange that his family doesn't care because I'm assuming his strip is all about them in the first place. And 500 is a pretty big number to create anything of.

I wouldn't even bother telling my family if I had a milestone (a year of making comics and none yet, haha) but then again, we all live separate lives in different places so it would be pretty odd if it did come up. I was surprised to find out that some of them actually do read the ones I post. Compared to news from other family members like 'I'm starting a nonprofit' I think that 'I did 25 comics!' sounds a bit silly. :]

Does my family... care? Even I don't care, LOL.

Who cares what page I'm on? I get way more excited when I brainstorm up a new scene/chapter for the script of my comics.

I can your POV in creating this thread though. Since you're drawing a strip about your family, you would feel bad if they seem nonchalant about it.

My mom thinks they are the best thing ever. She's never actually readthem, nor does she know how much I have made. But that's about as much family support that I have.

IE: "Nuh uh! My mom says I'm handsome!!!1"

Though the only milestones for me are story completions. Not page counts.

Read "The Devon Legacy".

Nah, the milestone thing isn't a big deal to anyone but me, I think! Most people who are reading the comic only *really* care that I've stuck with telling the story. As for my family, milestones aren't brought up - sometimes I bring up the time line, though. "Oh yeah, Salt hit two years the other day." And the response will be, "Really? That's nice. Wow, two years already? About two years ago was when the plumbing went out in our neighbor's house, and then she..."

i haven't yet found a person in real life that would actually care about me, much less about my comic.

still whenever i hit a milestone i make an act pretty much like a one-man play of people congratulating me ...

My kids have read some of Due East, particularly my oldest son. My wife co-writes Due East.

As far as milestones, I could say "Hey, we got 1000 pageviews today!" and my boys would say "COOL, Papa!" and life would go back to normal after that...

I find most of my family does care; and my boyfriend as well (Though, he's deeply involved so that only makes sense.)

In fact, I think my younger brother cares more about milestones than I do. When I woke up this morning I had a skype message (He live 8 hours away) which read, "Oh man Savannah, your 10th page! Getting close to 25!"

And my mother! She reads the comic and the comments every day and hands the link out to ALL her friends. She thinks its just fantastic.

So I guess my family does care; but they have always been really supportive of my writing - and we have always been closely connected.

Dad: Don't care. Hand me a beer.
Mom: Oh, that's great. But gee, can't read it today...I've got to...sort some...dish towels. Yeah, that...
Brother: Really? Okay...I'll read it.
Grandma: Maddy, I just don't like your sort of humor you write in that...how about a nice bible story comic? Wouldn't that be nice?
Grandmere: Are you famous for it? No? Then why should I care?

Etc. Etc. Friends think it's cool, though.
