Does this seem like a good idea for a comic?

I had this idea while I was in English class, and drew it in a spare jotter. I want to know what you think of it as an idea, I've already got a basic plot. Does it seem interesting? I want to know what people think, as I've not done a fantasy drawn comic in ages, so I want my first one in about half a year to be great. It's in blue pen, but I can easily change that into greyscale.

The character types seem perfectly fine. As you know, it's what you do with them that matters. It's the blending of art work quality with storytelling abilities that matters. But as long as you have strong pro9tagonist/antagonist relationships and a coherent plot and storyline, things should be fine.

The characters look fine, but it'd help to have a small synopsis of your comic. What is it about?

You ask us if it's a good idea... but you have not presented us with anything to judge that by. You have to tell us a bit about what you had in mind. Basically, all the picture tells us is that you want to make a comic about people who can do magic. That's... really vague.

Though on the bright side, I DO love that you at least made different categories of magic than the typical "Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Darkness, Cake, whatever" bull. "Soul" actually sounds very interesting.

But yeah. More details please.

Okay, plot introduction time.

After Urborg invaded Indra, 6 sorcerors were forced to flee. After their master is killed, the 5 young mages take refuge in Cathay. An assassin (antagonist) infiltrates the city and slays the King of Cathay. The assassin used magic to slay the King, and as the mages are the only magic users in the city, they are sentenced to death for murder. Another mage (antagonist) appears and saves them, only to betray them and turn them over to the King of the Soul Land, a paralell universe. Here, they are imprisoned until the antagonist appears again and saves them by teleporting them to the Spirit Plain, another paralell universe. here he explains why the King of the Soul Land wanted them to be captured. After they find out, they join the Soul Land Armada and launch an attack on the Mana Dimension. After the Mana Dimension is destroyed, the Mana Mage has all of his maic drained away, draining his life away with it. For a while, the heroes break up, and return to their own world, save for the Soul Mages who has been afflicted with a curse which means that if he ever goes back to his homeworld, he will succumb to a fiery hell. Meanwhile, the antagonist has been plotting behind the king's back and plans to overthrow him. If all of the Realms of Magic are destroyed, all magic in the universe will be floating around, waiting for him to absorb it. The Soul Mage returns to the real world to tell his fellow Mages about what the antagonist is planning to do. They realise they must stop him, or they all die.

Sound okay?

Sounds like a good idea. This is exactly the stuff for comics that get popular here.

Now all you need is:

- good quality art
- The women have to have pretty faces and big boobs
- The men have to be long-haired or have feminine-looking features (I think they're called "bishounen"?)
- Optional: Add some "cutie" creatures. Like mix a dog, cat, and mouse.

Anyway I wish you the best of luck on your comics.

Btw not to be rude but the art here so far looks beginner. Hey. We all gotta start somewhere (I had worse art that that lol). God knows what you'd be able to produce 5 years from now. People may give you shit... but just dont let it bother you. :)

Once again, good luck.

Yeah, I know my art ain't great, but I think it's alright for a 13-year old kid :)

I can't draw girls. I know. That sucks.

And yeah, people have gave me shit in the past. And it hasn't bothered me.

I'll share some advice my uncle gave me when I was younger, one day when I was drawing at the coffee table he looked over my shoulder to see what I was doing. I was drawing a girl who didn't look like she was turning out too well to me, but he said I was very talented. He happens to be an artist as well, however then he said "Although no matter how good you are there will always be some knuckle head over your shoulder saying it looks like a dog". I've had plenty of that but done let comments stop you and don't be discouraged because other artists you know may be better than you. If making comics is fun for you the best possible thing is to keep doing it.
As for your picture the part about Grave Magic, sounds cool to me. It is definitely better sounding than elemental magic which has been whipped to death by all kinds of comics, cartoons, and video games. Just the picture of the Grave Mage in my mind makes it seem like you have some creativity going for you, good luck with it.

SERIOUSLY, a weapon character will help out. Many mythical creatures are magic immune. And a body gaurd for the mages would be helpful, and can fill a few plot holes that are sure to come up every now and again. I mean I don't have a name for my main villian and I can only stall for so long before it causes some problems. Trust me, it is a great idea, just a weapon user will fill in the plot holes.

The common cliche is that for every wizard there is at least 1 warrior alongside. But that's just because the generic fantasy story can't do any better.

I have a RPG manual called Ars Magica, which is sort of a "realistic" RPG set in medieval Europe where you're a wizard. It breaks a lot of conventions and I'll list a few points for you to ruminate.

1. The wizard should be the boss/leader/hero, not the warrior. It only makes SENSE. The wizard is the smartest, the one who can READ, the richest, and the guy who can do things no one else can.

2. A wizard is like the head of a small business. He needs a lot of lackeys to do the mundane stuff for him while he does his wizard stuff. And a wizard has more mundane stuff that needs to be done than an ordinary person, such as gathering esoteric supplies. So any party is centered around the wizard being the boss. No wizard worth his salt would stand for being a side character in a party; who's gonna do stuff for him? It's only common sense.

3. Therefore, a successful wizard needs more than just a swordsman as help. He needs LOTS of different stuff. Here's a list of possible friends/servants who are with him:

-Shield man
-Stable hand
-Scout/Forester
-Cook
-Turb sergeant
-Point guard
-Beggar
-Archer
-Servant
-Bard
-Knight
-Merchant
-Bandit/Thief
-Lady
-Torturer

Sounds good to me. Don't worry about your drawing. You're only thirteen, so you have plenty of time to improve! To get better at drawing, a comic is one of the best things you can do. Remember to try to draw things you find hard rather than just finding ways to avoid drawing them. That way, you'll improve in your weak areas rather than just your strong ones. An artist who struggles to draw hands but tries is better than an artist who always puts characters hands behind their backs! Often people who start off not great at drawing but work hard at it surpass naturally talented but lazy people over time. Just do your best ^_^
Try out some tutorials on anatomy. You should find that they help your overall drawing ability in addition to helping you draw girls better.

Thanks for the advice, Darth Mongoose.

I've looked at loads of tuts about drawing girls, I just always f*ck up at the breasts.

I also have a little trouble drawing hands, but I'm getting better.

There won't be any melee fighters, the Mages can handle themselves. After all, they have been studying magic since they were about 4. ^_^

I got the idea for the comic after helping my friend out in Twilight Princess. It was the bit when Midna frees you from your cage in the Twilight Realm, and I told my friend that she used 'Twilight Magic', and the idea stemmed from a Legend of Zelda fancomic, into a whole new adventure.

kyupol, my favourite character (Spirit Mage ) does have long hair. So does the Soul Mage. When you think about it, all manga characters must have long hair, if they spike it up and it's really big. Especially DBZ characters. :) I never got why, when they went Super Saiyan 3 their hair gained about 4 feet of length.

Seems like an interesting idea. I don't want to risk repeating what everyone else said, but your choice of magical categories is a sign of creativity.

As for the art, you're already better off than I am, and I'm 10 years older :p
And again I'll repeat all the standard advice by saying that your art will improve over time, as long as you keep practising on your weaker points, etc.

All in all, I'm interested to see what this turns out to be.

Okay, it has been a very long time, but I'm now ready to start the comic. It will be done in pencil, on proper paper, scanned in, and hopefully the art will be a little bit better. Thanks for all the advice guys. Just don't expect regular updates, I'm focusing on my books right now.
