The question was, as far as I remember it:
"what is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?"
The meaning of it is more literal (as pertains to literature) than philosophical.
42 IS the answer to the question. Why Adams chose that number, I couldn't say. He was probably talking about the pointlessness and incomprehensibility of the question.
