haha though, on the subject of evangelion, I just finished writing the most batshit insane paper ever written, about Evangelion. I applied Freudian theory to it, and basically said that Kaworu represents both Shinji's mother and father and that is why he loves, yet kills him, and how the homo factor assuages shinji's castration anxiety and how the eva suit is just the fetishization of femininity...

Shinji and Kaworu make a rather cute couple. Shame Kaworu only showed up in the last real episode of NGE. Hopefully in the upcoming "Rebuild of Evangelion" series Kaworu will get more screen time.

It's not disturbing. It just doesn't induce happiness in me. I wouldn't be happy if he was with Asuka or that dull-eyed grey haired girl either. Shinji is painful and so are all his social interactions.

I would tend to agree. Nothing about Shinji makes me happy. In fact, I can't think of any anime character I hate more.

It doesn't surprise me. Shinji was always warmer around Kaworu. Anytime another female showed him affection he'd freak and be like 'BOOBIES! DO NOT WANT!!!111!!!'.

Maybe now that he's getting some action he won't be such a wuss. But I do agree. Seeing Shinji happy in any way merely makes me want to punch him in the face. As a matter of fact, the only reason why I like Shinji is because he's so easy to pwn. Who doesn't like a punching bag?

naah, I don't mind that they're skinny. That's like being like, "maybe I'd enjoy it if their noses weren't so damn pointy and their eyes weren't so big!" It just comes with the package. Suspension of disbelief; it's a cartoon.
OMG though, how can everyone hate Shinji?!?! He's the best! I guess if you don't like sad people who freak out a lot, then he would probably get on your nerves. But he's so... CUTE!!! he has a glass heart!!!!!!!!!! I think it's cool that rather than having him be all manly and tough, he's a withdrawn, gentle person. And I also like how rather than being one of those ubiquitous Naruto/Ichigo (from bleach) characters who are like "I always win because I never give up!!" Shinji is realistic and flawed, and so very human.
Besides, it's not like he's being a whiny teenager because his curfew's too early or something, his mental condition is understandable when you take his background and current situation into account.
I've been told I have odd tastes, though; I go for the really tortured characters. ~_~ and Shinji certainly fits that criteria! ^_^!!

Shinji is realistic and flawed, and so very human.

He's not particularly realistic, he's just an exaggeration of the typical mecha hero character. Most shows of this type have a lead character which is whiny and lacks self confidence. The difference, is that in other shows, the hero overcomes his weaknesses in the end. Shinji never does (at least not if you go by the movie ending), which makes it very hard to respect him in any way.

Besides, it's not like he's being a whiny teenager because his curfew's too early or something, his mental condition is understandable when you take his background and current situation into account.

Taking his current situation into account only makes him look worse. The two people who fight along side him are worse off, yet have more balls than Shinji ever will. It just makes him look more pathetic and despicable.

I dunno, this makes me much happier.
