I need help if anyone knows how to work gimp can you tell me:
1. If I have more than one layer how do I just keep one of them with a white background not that checkered thing.
2. How do I resize my picture on GIMP

I have GIMP, but I only use it for special effects n stuff, so I'm not that much of an expert at it.
1. If I were you, I would resize my pictures in MS Paint so that you don't have to worry about the 'checkered thing'. This about answers 1 & 2
2. In paint, I usually use about 950, 600 inches (i think it's inches, someone correct me). That answers # 3.

1) delete the layer that you don't want and click "Image>flatten image". If you're looking for a temporary white background and still want the other layers to show, then place a white layer underneath the layer that you're working on. The checkered pattern just shows transparency.
2)Image>scale image (set interpolation to "cubic" )
3)600 by 800 or something like that. You generally don't want the width to go past 640 pixels
