I used to use to do all my lettering-- but now that I draw everything in Manga Studio, its easier for me to just do the letters there. Anything to save a little time. I Think it comes out better when I use illustrator, though.
I do a bit of odd lettering jobs for other folks, and I still use Illustrator. I also use it to do all the layout for the non comics pages of my published books as well. And... well I'm a graphic designer, so I use it at work pretty much all day long...
That's where I stand on illustrator.

I use Illustrator to do my lettering. It's pretty useful for that sort of thing.
However, it does not possess an function to generate word balloons or captions. You'll have to draw them yourself or download a program that corresponds to it.
I make my word balloons in Windows Paint and then transfer it to illustrator.

Haha I meant to mention that. Incidentally, you can get some really decent vector balloons to use in Illustrator at blambot.com, and then just tweak em as needed.
