Do mini stories in comics make them better?

Like alot of webcomics (not just ones on drunk duck) sometimes they go through small story arcs, usually 6-20 strips long, or longer.

My question is: does this make this a better comic? Comics like white ninja that follow no storyline whatsoever are also popular.

I don't think story arcs are necessarily better or worse than non-linear comics. I think it all depends on what kind of story one is trying to tell.

I tell huge stories in my strip, like an old-time serial comic would, but I'm not sure how lost people get.

I think it depends on the comic. White Ninja would lose so much of its random charm if it had a storyline of anykind, but then if you look at Megatokyo, you'll get people who disagree (violently) over whether the storylines are better or the random strips at the beginning were.

I say, as long as you pick one or the other (in general, ie don't switch in the middle of the comic) then arcs or the lack thereof doesn't affect whether the comic is "good" or not. What that really depends on is the creator more than anything.

Well, the beauty of comics is that they aren't all the same - while storylines work for some comics, there's nothing wrong with another comic if it goes for randomness. My comic is all storyline related, though...

I’ve got a short attention span so typically I like short fast story arcs.
But the long ones are cool when there good.
None is great too.

I agree that it depends on the comic and what it's intended to do. I also think that some "strip" comics evolve into story ones, like It's Walky!!(formerly "Roomies") and CRFH. So the two aren't always mutually exclusive.

I think alot of the ones used in comic anthologies are really great as they are as a short/stand-alone story. Sometimes a story can be spoiled with a storyline that just goes on forever. "cough...Inu Yasha...cough"

well both are good..

for a gag strip stories need to be short.. you don;t want to have read 4 pages to get to the joke..if you look at published strips i will use calvin & hobbes as example here..watterson would have themes and stories that were 5 to 15 strips maybe a little longer long but each strip could stands alone as a gag .yet added to the big theme of say teachers are evil or girls suck and then he would go back to random..for a time..where each strip could stand alown the new reader did not feel lost yet if they liked it and came back tomarrow they found the new joke went with the last..

I love long stories when they are well done the development of the people in the story and action has to carry them.. the reader gets attached to the people / furrys, vampires , what ever in them and keeps reading becuse they want to know what happens next. all great stories have that you want to know what happens next facter..and you eather love or love to hate the people in them. as Inu yasha is already up ..I'll talk about him.. yes he can be as predictable as scoo-be doo..(I know I will get hate mail for say such) but many reader like that.. what carries the story is the give and take in the relation ships you want to know is he ever going to grow up get married and have evil little kids..(i profread to much fan fic here i know what some of you with dirty minds what to happen in that story you want him to be a bad dog . yes more hate mail yes i know it will come for saying such) ..now back to the subject : the reader wants to know is he going to lose this chick and go off and have fun killing stuff on his own or will some body fimaly kill him...and me i like see ing him do a header everytime kagome yells sit...the point is we come back and read and buy what 20 some books...now out..

what i am saying is they are two diffrent catigories. the whole what do you like apples or bannanas deal..
do what makes you happy if you are not enjoying it your not going to keep doing it...i figure if i write the kind of story i always want to read and never seem to find..it will be good and maybe some ones else is also was always looking for that unwriten book that is slowly getten written.. if all else do two one for random and one comic for your stories..

sorry this is so long. and if i P____ off any one i did not mean to i reall do like inu yasha at times .& i cant spell..so whatever..
