Disappointment in Anticipated Games

Were there any games you were so excited about and all you get is this bunch of bullcrap? C'mon, I know you've experienced it at least once... that is, unless you don't play any video games.

I've been pretty much looking forward to Metal Slug 5 when it was in development. Joy, the original characters returned to kick some more ass. That nifty black slug (Later known as Blackhound) was the one that got me excited the most; you vs. Metal Slug.
And then I get this game that's been rushed. The original SV-001 is overshadowed by this lameass Slug Gunner (I find this worse than the infamous Ostritch Slug), the game's story makes no sense, and some of the bosses were really cheap.

And then there's F.E.A.R. Extraction Point. The minigun addition and the way Douglas Holiday died was awsome. The rest is crap, shit, and bullshit. Instead of revealing the story, they end up creating more plot holes than 20-ft swiss cheese. Twas still nice fighting that giant mech, but still, I wish I could fight it in somewhere more open-spaced, rather than inside the parking garage.

Well, I WAS about to put Ace Combat Zero... but that game was pretty much okay, but a little less of what I expected.

Recently, probably Enchanted Arms and Dead Rising. After reading the reviews and raves, I expected so much more out of both. Instead I got a boring RPG where the system gets stale after two fights (and God that battle music gets old fast), where the storyline is uninteresting, and the character models are ugly as sin. The golems had more personality than the main characters, but they were completely worthless to use in battle.

Dead Rising seems like a game that with a bit more time and effort could have been prett fun. It had the gimmick of having lots of different "weapons" to use, but once you bashed a zombie with a TV once, it wasn't really any fun anymore. The fighting mechanics were clunky and most of the items were pretty useless. plus there wre several elements of the game that seemed tacked on and generally not very fun.

I'll have to get back to you on Gears of War. It has some really annoying oversightson the part of the dev team, but I can't properly judge the game without playing it some more.

I haven't recieved or bought a disppointing game very recently (in that I had high expectations for it) because I now do my own buying - since I lack next gen systems, and I take my time to look into and research games I'm going to drop half my paycheck on.
The last time I was really disappointed in a video game was FF8 - though at first I thought it was really cool.
And, I guess, KotOR II - it was really awesome, but such a let down by the end. But I do regret the money I spent on it.

I'd have to say... the PSP. Yeah, I still don't know why that didn't work out. The battery life was more than enough for my needs, the device was capable of amazing graphics, and I even had mine rigged up with all kinds of emulators. But somehow... the damn thing just didn't feel worth it.

serously, does anyone remember 'Enter The Matrix'? for all the cash they spent on it, you'd have thought that there would be some degree of brilliance, it was mediocre (in a bad way)!

I was very, very angry with Death Jr. VERY ANGRY!

Actually the PSP itself is kind of a big disappointment so far. But that's not really a game. It's a lack of games.

I was a little disappointed with the N64 Castlevania. I didn't think it was downright awful, but there were some issues they should have resolved before they shipped it.

Star Fox Assault for Gamecube was still a passable game but failed to live up to the great potential it could have reached. N64 Star Fox was excellent.

Sword of Mana on the GBA. It was also a reasonable game, but it sure didn't capture my heart like the original Secret of Mana did. Maybe no future Mana game ever will, just because they don't have the advantage of being a new concept.

Dawn of War.
It looks so great, but plays like such a boringly typical rts... Nothing unique or clever. The same old crap. But the look and hype promised so much!
Plus the AI does the boring old 'early rush' strategy that's SO predictable and easy to beat. Not so much a strategy as automated moron play. It basically invalidates the use of most units: Since the ones it takes a long time to research and build will usually only ever face hordes of mid-level units, and in the meantime you waste heaps of units and time in defence while you hang around building the things. Specialist units are a waste of time too, since the battles are usually too big and fast to micromange units that are too stupid to use all their abilities.
Some of the missions were pretty cool, but there were hardly any of them...
-So I haven't been bothered with the expansions.

FEAR multiplayer was too tiny, fast, and limited.

Ultima 8 was completely unfinished! It looked great and was so fun, but for a plot driven RPG it just didn't make sense. Leaving off finishing a 1/4 of the game made it pretty crap at the end. They wouldn't get away with that these days... You'd hope so anyway.

@ rich, i can't argue with that, i've never played Fable!

Another crap game that had a lot of hype:
2 years ago, people in my year at school were going on about runescape, i tried it once, it was boring so i never tried it again!

Devil May Cry 2. Dear sweet god, don't get me started. Oh well,i'll get started anyway:

First off, Dante acts like he's in his freaking 40's. Like he's too old to be cool or be a smartass. Secondly, he has like what; seven lines throughout the whole damn game, C'mon people!!!

Thank the video game gods that they redeemed themselves with Devil May Cry 3 or i'd have to say F-U to Capcom as a whole.

What's wrong with Halo 2? I'm still doing the story mode. But it's one of the most fun multiplayer fps's around.

I hate Halo, but that's probably because I suck at it.

I thought that the new Pokemon games Ruby and Sapphire (okay, so they're not new any more) were kind of a dissappointment. Gold and Silver were so long (16 badges) and fun, but then Ruby and Sapphire were short, and Team Rocket was replaced with some crappy nature-themed teams. Emerald was better, but not a huge amount better.

I hope Diamond and Pearl rock.

The first game didn't need online support to be awesome. The second game relies soley on internet support (and your money) to be awesome, as the single player mode, quite frankly, sucks.

Not to mention, it was terribly overhyped.

That's what's wrong with it.

Luckily the X-Box had four controller ports, so if you had friends in the local area, internet support wasn't needed. But i hear you, when the internet support did become a factor, it was a pain in the ass. And the hype generated over it was like Final Fantasy 7 x10 (albeit, FF7 was a badass game).

I was a bit dissapointed when I bought Unlimited Saga and Shadow of The Collosus. Unlimited Saga was just, well, boring xD. And Shadow of the Collosus is a nice game and all, very beautiful graphics, but Im not too crazy about the storyline, slaying Collosi. My sister loves the game tho :3 I gave it to her and she's almost finished beating the game. :)

Guild Wars. I pre-ordered it and play the beta to death and loved it. Then the game came out, huge dissapointment. Arenanet flat out lied about what they were going to do and it's not even a real MMORPG, also it's not addicting at all. (to me anyway) After going down a bad road for a while after that, I found..WoW :3 (and I used to say GW was better than WoW, rofl)

I HATE WOW!!!!! OMFG IT SHOULD BURN!!!! i am(was) a die hard Diablo 2:Lord of Destruction fan, and when WoW first came out, Blizzard had the dumbass idea to throw Wow on D2's servers. I had never experience a "Failed to Join" or " Could not find game" when i was looking at the game before that point. I have hated Wow ever since. D2 is godly, WoW is shitty

WoW just isn't worth the money for me. I mean, C'mon, do they really need to charge $15 a month when they have 6 million players? That's like 90 million dollars a month! Greedy jerks.

As for games that dissapointed me, MGS3. Think about it, in the first hour of the game, I only played for about a total of 20 minutes because of all the FMVs and chatting. They weren't even a good 20 minutes. Just fumbling with the controls, slinking through mud, and eating croc. If Kojima wants to make a movie he should just do it and stop trying to shoehorn a game into it.

Another game, for the Gamecube, was Custom Robo. I figured the robots would be some big ass Gundam type things but no.... they are all small and like 2 inches tall. Its like an Xmods gundam... pathetic good game though bad storyline. the guy never kisses the girl...:(

i dont have xbox live and my uncal and dad cant do shit even when they team up on me but i had a lot of fun playing the singel player game thugh i wish they didnt downgrade the pistol i whent thrugh most of halo 1 with just that thing. also the hunters are way better in halo 2 because in halo 1 if u stand still on a flat surface their shots will always go to the left of you. then u can just stand there with a pistol, rocketlaucher,or sniper rifel to take them out. thugh i like to have fun with them and use melee even if its impossible to kill them like that

Peipei
but Im not too crazy about the storyline,

Did you ever play Ico? It made the game much more meaningful for me, although they do wait to unload most of the plot on you til the end. Both were very quiet games, though, but I still found them very appealing.

Anyhow...

BATEN KAITOS, hands down. What I was expecting was this. What I got was a game with graphics no better than FF9.

Bare in mind that I'm pretty sure they went through the trouble to actually relip sync that demo for English...and not a single one of those clips appeared in the actual game. There were no prerendered graphics in the entire thing. So what you got was a flat world [jeuxvideo.fr] with rendered characters superimposed on it and a middling card-based combat system. Now, this would all be forgivable if the plot and characters were captivating, but they just weren't up to snuff. I mean, I enjoy all the old games where that was the standard...but it has to be done right, and it really helps if that's what you're expecting.

Other games....

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
One of the most incipid games I've ever played. The characters are trapped in a dream-world like tower that replicates their memories...i.e. an excuse for you to go through all the levels of the first game, minus any of the actual appeal of those levels since each one operates on a randomized system to make levels 'unique.' What happens here is what always happens when you have randomly generated levels- they all turn out the same. The game had one of the worst combat systems I've seen- another card-based system, but in real time so you're shuffling through your deck while trying to move Sora around and not get hit. They also tried to translate some of the combat moves, like back attacks, that were dependant on 3 dimentionality into a 2D game...it didn't work. Also, good luck getting good cards. Shops are more like gambling. You pay to have the option of picking up one of several randomly generated cards that you don't get to see until you've actually paid.

.hack
Like Chain of Memories, every level is randomly generated, albeit in 3D, so they have the same bland generic flavor regardless of slight differences in ambiance and texturing. The combat system isn't exactly bad, but it is pretty boring and visually uninteresting. The plot is slow if it's there at all...much like the anime, frankly. They don't even really touch on it much in the first game. Oh well, at least it had Mistral.
