I've been developing my drawing style a little more and this is what I've come up with:

And here's a coloured version of the toddler, it's not how I want it though lol

I did have a picture of a woman somewhere too, but I can't find it.

Anyway, please let me know what you think!

looks like a manga-american hybrid style.

I'd say its ok but it needs more polishing. I know its difficult to do your own style that doesn't rip off of anime and manga.

This is not a criticism- but all your faces look very similar. It's good that you're expanding out into different shapes but the main features like eyes, nose, lips are all represented in more or less the same way. Just experiment with all kinds of strange things and see what happens. :] People can have all kinds of different face shapes, eye and nose types, etc.

All the faces look fine head-on, but i think the profile needs work. Their faces look smushed. :] It's okay to make things like noses and chins stick out a lot, and have sharp angles. That kind of thing can make characters distinctive. Do a google search for "human head profile" and you will see lots of different types. Try using your image program to lay your drawing over some photos to see how the proportions match up- I think the face/jaw will need to protrude a little more, and the back of the skull is deeper.

I saw a thread you posted a while ago with some art, and you've definitely improved a lot since then!

ERasER & Hippie Van: Thanks guys! :)

Kyupol: My style is influenced slightly by Manga, but I've been trying to add more realistic elements to it without making it overly complicated. I didn't mean for it to look like the American style, but I can see what you mean, and you're not the first to say this.

Skoolmunkee: I see what you mean, I'll try experimenting more with face shapes. Tell you what, when I get the chance I'll fill a page with my experiments, and I'll post it here. Also, I can see what you mean about the profile view aswell. I'll fix that too lol.

I would recommend you start drawing sequential art with that style. In my experience, that will help you develop something that is "yours" faster than just sketching out concepts.

coloring = great!

art = needs a little work on anatomy and proportion. Or maybe you were just feeling a little awkward or something.

to latest one-It does look a little weird in body position and proportion

I like Hunchdebunch's stuff a lot of the time and the fact that it looks the same sometimes I believe is supposed to happen. She is saying that she is trying to develope her style. I guess that's her style.

Look at how he's leaning. Also look at the way one hand just sits there and the legs are twisted in a different position than the torso and the head.

1) Head looks a little too big. Not sure if that's an element in this new style of yours or if he's meant to be a teenager or some species of extra terrestrial that has that type of proportion.

2) Foreshortening of both arms. I know that's a challenge and I screw that up sometimes too.

3) Body angle a bit weird. His head is facing right while body is facing forward.

4) In that position, his right leg should be moved a bit back. Since drawing is all about representing a 3-d object on a flat surface, to create that illusion, make sure that the knee of the right and left legs are not aligned.

Yeah, I see what you mean about the position of his legs in relation to his torso lol
He is a teenager, so that is why his head is a bit big, although I tend to accidenlt give adult characters too big heads as well lol.
Foreshortening is a nightmare, but I'm working on it :)

Well I've been taking Skoolmunkee's advice, and experimenting with heads and faces. Here's the first sheet where I just went crazy basing heads on any shape I could think of at the time (and I mean REALLY crazy in some cases lol). At some point I'll upload a couple of pages of faces I copied from photos, but drawn in my style.

Here's some important advice I got from a college teacher. He has been a professional artist and character designer for years now.

Don't bother yourself with trying to make your "style" right now... Don't even mess with it until years from now. When a person tries to settle down into a style, they're choosing to stay with certain methods and conventions of drawing, and at this level in your artistic progression it would severely limit you.

Instead, master the fundamentals of drawing first. Take figure drawing classes. Draw people in the park or airport. Make sure you can properly draw a real human being. You work on this stuff, and your "style" will come to you by accident. And it will be backed up by real anatomical knowledge and look MUCH better. You'll have a much better sense of balance and proportion.

Hawk: This is just one style that I work in, it is the one I've usually used for my comics so far, but I don't stick to this style for everything. What you're saying is absolutely right, I agree with you completely. In this thread I'm just showing the developent of one style I work in. I've been thinking about stylistic choices for comics a lot recently, and would really like to work in different styles more often (which is why I started my comic Dark Light, just to give me a break from the usual style lol), so for any later projects I'm going to think harder about what kind of artwork would fit the mood and tone of the story.

So, I recently did some concept art for Patronus, a fantasy/sci-fi comic series (yes, I'm actually planning a series for once!) that is in early planning stages right now.

This guy is called Santiago. I drew this one a little before the next two, which is why he is not drawn as well.

These next two aren't coloured yet, but I decided to post them anyway.

This guy is Trae:

And this is Lucinda:

As you might have noticed, I experimented a little with line thickness on the drawings of Trae and Lucinda.

Nice linearts. Trae and Lucinda looks a lot alike, I don't know if it is supposed to. Santiago seems to stand out(in a good way) from your first drawings in his thread. His face has his own distinct trait. His hair is better colored too.

demontales: Thanks :) Trae and Lucinda won't look alike at all once they're coloured, Trae has pale skin, and his hair is dark, where as Lucinda is tanned and her hair is blonde. I'm glad you think Santiago stands out, hopefully the other characters will stand out too, once I've developed them further :)
