Poopdeck Swabbing

Art: 3.75

The art in Poopdeck Swabbing is very appealing. It's very energetic, complex but simple, and clean. It matches the humour well, and all the characters are very well drawn in their designs.

The current artist who has temporarily taken over the strip during the main artist's (Loki) absence, though not a completely poor artist, does provide some pretty lack luster work in comparision to the former cartoonist (no offense, Metz, seriously).

Writing: 4

I couldn't exactly pin point what really sets this comic apart from others...other then the fact its just so damn entertaining to read. Even with Loki's absence I don't think the comic will suffer under Metz's hands as he's been helping write it from earlier anyway.

The writing goes well with the art, its just as energetic and appealing. Some of the humour seems really random, but its not just completely stupid one liners tossed in at end with the hopes of suprising a laugh out of you. There are storylines, but, judging by the Bobsled story, this comic is more about one shots or extended one shots, then a continuing story.

I'm not too sure why, but this comic is just really fun to read...though there may be some people out there who just won't find this humour to be their cup of tea, I think for the most part it'll attract a pretty good fanbase.

Overall: 4ish

Its definately something I'd put in my faves despite the sometimes sporadic updating. I wish Metz good luck with his stint on the comic, and I wish Loki a safe stay and return from Kenya.

I had a good time reading this one...

Poopdeck Swabbing is a random humour gag-strip comic with a VERY loose pirate theme, and occasional short storyarcs, but no major plotline.

The first thing that jumped out was how polished the artwork is when the main artist is drawing. Though the artwork is simple, it's clean, consistant and has great line quality. The action is easy to follow, and the style just fits the tone perfectly. The stabd-in artist draws more sketchily, still fitting with the mood, but with a distinctly different feeling. Perhaps the two artists could learn from each other, since Metz, the stand in, is excellent at experimenting with layout, but could improve his drawing, and Loki is a superb draftsman who should experiment with his page layouts more.

Despite the lack of a main plotline, this comic drags you in with excellent characters and storyarcs. The comic within a comic within a comic within a comic within a comic joke (you have to read it to get it) was both inspired and hillarious. Occasional video-game references are made, which could confuse some readers who don't know their games, but which I found to be done in a subtle, original way. The mega-man villains escaping from the asylum, but turning out not to be the megaman villains at all being a good example. There are inevitable jokes that fall a little flat, and I think I spotted a spelling error or two, but generally, the comic was very sharp and funny.

I'd recommend giving it a look, even if it's just as a fun way to pass half an hour while you read through the archives.

The Good
Very funny, I love the fact that how you brough back references to old jokes through out the comic. The art is also very good, could use some improvement at times, but through most of the pages it was brilliant. The art is better than most of the drawn comics I read on DrunkDuck though. Finally it has a pirate, now who doesn't love pirates, maybe if you would itroduce even more pirate characters, it would be even better. :D

The Bad
Although the jokes are pretty funny, there is no apparent plotline for the readers to stick to. While reading through your archive I often became bored towards the end because there was very little to relate from one page to the next. I often found myself confused trying to figure out if there was a plot line as I continued. This seems more of a comic for your fans who have reading from the beginning, than to rather just pick up from the last update and start from there. Like I said before drawings could use a little improvements but, your current style seems to be going well for you.

Overall: 8

Keep up the good work!

I enjoyed reading Poopdeck Swabbing. While I didnt die from laughing, I certainly giggled and found Poopdeck amusing. The humor is well written, if not creative from time to time. I like that the art has some personal touches to it by the artist. Its one of those not quite polished, but finished line work that gives the strip its character.

While I understand that the fact it does not have any concrete plotline, it didnt bother me. Its something that could be featured in the newspaper comics like Garfeild or Peanut.

The only problem I see is that sometime the writing is a little hard to read, caused lack of spaces, cramps in the artist's hand, etc. Eventually Metz tempoarly takes over Loki's strip and art has changed. I dont like to sound harsh, but the art could use some improvement and I found it to be a bit of a put off. I had some trouble understanding what was going on due to the writing style. My suggestion is that an improvement to the art and font writing will improve fanbase.

Just my 2 cent. :)

It's been a disappointment to me that I have only really discovered this comic at a point when it seems to be in some sort of hiatus.
I've been impressed with the writing although some of the pace seems imbalanced with the narrative tripping to keep up with itself and the breaks in the narrative filled with filler stuff didn't help. The "what would my favourite comic character do?" sequence was very good and the parody was well used. Advice; parodies quickly become over used, don't rely on them. The ending had better be impressive because I believe there are more than a few people on tenterhooks.

The lettering I like because it hasn't been done on a computer, which means it's consistent with the overall feel. The lettering can be bad when it is uneven or getting on the too small to read comfortably side. The art is good but needs work to make it more consistent a greater variety of tone. Cross-hatching or grayscale would do.

Art:

I'm gonna give the art a 4.75. I'll have to agree with crazyduck in that it was certainly very energetic and I generally found it to be one of the most original and creative styles I've found on Drunk Duck. The expressions in particular were a source of much enjoyment for me, something I think a lot of people can learn from (including myself :) ). On a whole I'd say that everything was pretty consistant on this point. Go you!

Writing:

Now this is where I lost almost all interest. I give it a 2.5. Throughout the entire archive of this comedy comic I never once Lawled and I found that to be a negative. A lot of the time I was just so bored with random hard to follow jokes/plot I found myself skimming just to get to the end of the page. Now I'm not saying it's completely poorly written I just didn't get the point of it all. I actually found the writing delightful and might be interested in reading a short story be the same author. Just not any more jokes. sorry :(

Also before I forget I did like the orignality of the story arcs. The superhero bobsled team was probably my favorite comic in the whole archive.

Overall:

4 I don't think that mediocre jokes and plot should detract from some freakin awesome art. The art and writing fit really well with each other despite the writing not always being understandable. So in summation LOVE the art and I thought the writing was so-so.
Everybody wants that fold of matches to reinflate their confidence.

I positively adore PDS. It's simply brilliant. Too many comics focus on the artwork so much that the comedy is just bland (if there is any). PDS has artwork that, while not spectacular, fits the style of the humor, and adds to the humor itself. The comedy is pure gold in every way, shape, and form.

What I like about it:

It's simpleness and easability to follow. It's colors (when there are colors). It's old artist (Loki). It's humor (or sometimes lack there of!). It's (two) main characters. It's video game references (even though they're all old ones). It's name. It's subject matter. It's target audience. The fact that Loki has said he's left to Kenya and joined the peacecor--but that's not really what I enjoy. I more enjoy the reader's reactions to these acclamations.

What I don't like about it:

The lack of color (for the most part). Some of the poses. Some of the panels are off. Some of the text is merged together. It's (sometimes) lack of humor. It's story lines.

For the most part I thoroughly enjoy PDS. It was really hard to come up with any negatives. I wish Loki luck in Kenya, and hope that he does well building wells for natives and teaching them how to grow corn.

My personal thumb up!

I like this comic, and it's hard to say why but I'll let you know the best way possible...

art:
Some people would say the art is too loose and sloppy, but I say it's consistent and I can get behind that. I love how free and energetic it is. The style also fits for the type of humor comic that it is. I doubt I'd like it as much if it were more "arty" and "pretty."

I think sometimes people might miss the point of an art style that is different... not quite what they're used to seeing. Some people confuse bad art for being a "style" sometimes, but it's the consistency that makes it a style. If your comic is supposed to be anime-inspired and your characters have wonky anatomy then that's bad art, but if their anatomy is stylized and consistent then you have a "style."

writing:
Again, to compliment the art nicely the writing is perfectly suited for this kind of strip. It's the kind of sarcastic "ha ha, here's a joke" type of humor. I like that. I can't explain why! This type of humor just appeals to me.

Overall:
I love this comic. I know I said I liked it at the top but I changed my mind. I LOVE it. I hope to see more of this comic soon. The art, writing, humor, it all works. Give it a chance. You'll like it too.

10 out of 11.
