This comic has an intimidating amount of pages. Over 300 actually, which is, a lot!
If you can't handle the whole archive i suggest you review the latest 30-40 pages.
I've got work to do, but it took me forever to finally save my place, & start this review. I just didn't want to stop reading.
Gnoph is...
...wow...
What a wondrous book. I'm enamored.
Solid writing. Unique, but compelling art. If I didn't have bills to pay, I'd still be reading.
I'm VERY VERY hard on my entertainment, and I'm just in love with this book, & I'm not even to the half way point.
Crappy review, I know. It's such a singular vision that I don't feel comfortable doing anything other than reading it. I have no suggestions. The quirky art ("quirky" in a good way), is just...
well it seems that I am suffering from the same consequence of the last reviewer XP I started reading and I was totally HOOKED on this comic! I started reading yesterday, had to stop to go to sleep and finished this morning. I really wanna know what happens next and well, the storyline is amazing!!! I thought it was rather original many aspects! ^-^ felt really bad during a certain character death >..> I DO see improvements from the earlier pages to the latest pages and I do love how well she can draw, in her words, 'emaciated corpses' XD though I find that the art still could be improved... the way she draws bare feet for example and I have a sneaking suspicion she might draw them a lot because she's not very good at them (like how I do perspectives a lot cuz I suck at them XDDD) but the style just seems really... messy to me, the inking and the coloring especially... the most 'solid' looking characters with the best line-art and painting are the gnoph-human-form which only appear in 'mind space' O.o I think that's rather ironic lol
sometimes what's happening in a page is confusing and reading the author notes definitely help with that! and I found myself not understanding a page, reading a few more, then going back to it and the re-read would make the page more comprehensible... which I'm sure is like that a lot in most stories actually >.>
overall this was totally worth reading! wish there was MORE in the archive.
Thanks, both to Cs3ink and flyingwind66, for making through my archives and writing reviews!
I'll do what I can to fix my drawings of feet (I don't purposefuly draw them a lot because I'm bad at them, but you're right that I am bad at darwing them). I'm not sure how to be less "messy," since I'm not clear on what you mean. I know that I tend to do the Gnophs in solid colors without shading or dripping, and usually with pens instead of watercolors. Is that what you mean, flyingwind66? I do want to keep their appearance and that of the "real" world distinct, but I'll keep working on making both spaces clear in line and action.
Also, I'm glad that both of you like the story! So, again, thanks for the reviews, and I'll try to keep improving.
This is another comic that even though it hat a lot of updates, I went through each page and was sad to get all caught up (that meant no more to read)
Artwork
Very, very different. Far more artistic than your standard fare, done old-school with pencils, pens, ink and water-colour. It has a definite psychedelic look which is very appropriate given the nature of the story which takes some time to take in completely. I don't know what else to say about it; it's just so different (in a good way).
Writing
This is a truly excellent story, original, complex and well thought out. Just a warning to those who like to know what's going on: You won't know what's going on. Even after all those updates, you still won't quite know everything about what's going on. If it's any comfort, the WRITER knows what's going on and so you can take solace in that she knows where she's going and you will find out eventually.
Style
Chock full of style. Pretty much well everything in this comic is stylized; the story-telling methods, the writing and the artwork.
Overall
The short of it is that this is a comic I would buy in hard copy if I had the cash, but I'm happy it's on Drunk Duck so we can also read the comments. Read it and enjoy.
Art:
++: Original style. Love the hair loopies. ML improved a lot from her previous comic Akniatt making Gnoph a continuation of her development.
I love the mixed media. The watercolor really gets amazing as it progresses. There was this teapot panel I really liked. And the forest scenes at the end of the first story arc were wonderful.
I like it how computer media is used to brighten the colors. Webcomics in watercolor that don't mess with the colors look washed out and too light.
ML has great composition in the panels. Especially as the comic progresses. There is also good framing in the panels. Many different angles make the scenes really enjoyable.
-:Some times I wish for a more extended fighting scene. There is a tendency to show an action scene in too few panels making it hard to understand what's going on(or too many close ups). like: Will mom getting stabbed. Abby's stabbing sprees sometimes seem cut. You see blood fly but not as much seeing the weapon going into the person. Too many close ups and not enough full views to tell what's going on.
In some of the latest chapters there is a tendency to pack up some pages with many panels. (Like I'm one to talk.) Maybe it's all part of the plan or maybe ML is rushing a bit. I don't mind seeing more updates with less page panels ,but well.. the pages with 5+ panels are still in good composition though.
Story:
+: Oh gee I love the story. Interesting characters. They have their flaws both inside and out. Abby's the not-so-pretty heroine with a mean streak and Will's the pansy medieval dude. Those two fit really well together (Abby and Will). Their personalities change as the story progresses. I like Lyss' transformation on Will.
I really like the dialog too. It really fits differently into each character which is a sign of good characterization.
What captured me about the story is the (very possible) impending doom of the characters. A gnoph always makes the host lose his or her mind in the end. Makes it hard to predict how Gnoph's going to end. A reader naturally wants a good ending for characters they care about so the story keeps interest.
-:I'm still not sure about the Lt. I think there needs to be more development or more air time for this character to do something other than talk, because I'm not sure how the Lt. will fit into the upcoming plot.
New characters, Takahashi and Brad fit in pretty well. Abby's Dad arc was wonderful.
The other new characters fade out. I think there needs to be a character page to keep track of them. (Like who died and whose still alive.)
Other things about the writing: ML sometimes skips over scenes. The village scene was originally skipped over with a dialog panel(it was added later though, but that scene wasn't in the book ;_; ). There was also the Ren-fest chapter. It could have been really good for developing Lt.'s character since he was a new character at that time.
Ah well. I'm sure there will be more Lt.
