Seeing as Cops and Robbers has it's 4 reviews, and some people have been asking, I decided to use my power as 'Review Helper' to make the next thread. Eggbert will have to sticky it.

Right, anyway, well I think this comic came about because of something I like to call 'The Neo-Century Random Coolness and Angst Syndrome'. Basically it means that in this new century (the one with all the zeros) there's a feeling inside the youth that if they make something depressing and yet cute it will do well. It will be edgy. It will be, do I dare say, 'cool'.

All you have to do is look at the works of Jhonen Vasquez...or many of the other people at SLG, to see that this stuff sells. Random violence and weird crazy episodes involving cute things is something that the masses love. It's 'funny' because it's so ironic or distant from reality. So I don't hold it against GBCink for doing their comic in that style. I mean, this is a syndrome. You can't just get rid of a syndrome!

So let's see, how does this comic hold up as a comic? The art is enjoyable. It retains the depressing yet cute style while experimenting. Some things look really old with a sketchy style on yellowing paper, while others are just pure white and black. Then there's even some episodes with color. Those blood splatters are really impressive.

The writing is random, cute, funny, disturbing, socially 'aware' (another terms which people love to use) and ridiculous. I enjoyed it, but I can't help feeling this is sort of going with the whole 'crowd' of random comics.

The style is distictive, but randomness is easy to do. Just use a combo on non-sequiter storylines and some reoccuring characters. It's an enjoyable read though.

I was referring to you when I said "take it away". Cuz you're his assistant. And it looks like you took it away!

Anyway, this comic has me all kinds of confuzzleficationism. Looks like one of those random, random things... I can't make sense of it. The art, as ccs put it... is knd of... gothic. One of those comics that can look genuinely creepy at times... like those Salad Fingers flash cartoons, where everyone is horribly disfigured and has a zillion stitches in their face. Of course that's not exactly what this is... but still it kind of reminds me of it.

The humor just isn't there for me. I'm lookin', but I'm not findin'. Guess it's just not my thing. This comic looks like something I'd find in the new times, and I'm sure you'd get many a gothic, parent hating, happiness dodging teenager reading this, but like I said, it's just not my thing.

At times the art is pretty darn good. Other times it aint. At times the writing is clever, original and funny. Other times it aint. Probably because it relies too heavily on the randomness factor. I mean, randomness = unexpected = different. And in a world where everything (and I mean everything) has been done to death, different = interesting. But does interesting = funny or significant or thought-provoking or anything else that we all want to be (or else why would we be making these comics?)...

I'd say your ratio of pretty darn good to aint is about 50/50. With a better trained eye and ear, you could raise that. My advise is dont try to be random. Instead, make a point in every comic you make but (and this is the important part) make is *seem* random.

Because nothing is truly random. Nothing.

This comic started off pretty good and made me laugh a couple of times. But then as I looked further through the archives it began to get a little tedious. I don't know whether the artist "lost it" or it was just too much of the same thing and it got boring. Regardless, one or two of the later comics also got a chuckle.

I would say the main problem with the comic is that randomness does not always equal funny.

Oh and the art is pretty good.

Actually I heavily agree with x3022 on the 'making it seem random while actually making a point'. That can help bring some real 'class' to a comic.

Anyone else have a review to contribute? Or should we move on?
