Critically mauled games you genuinely like.

Dead Premonition. In all fairness, a lot of the reviews were accurate. This game is clunky, it feels like an unreleased Dreamcast title, and it's too absurd to take seriously at all. But to me that was the charm. Easily one of the most hilariously insane games I've ever picked up. If you have 20 bucks, an Xbox, and are able to "get" the so-bad-its-good thing, then I suggest picking it up and giving it a try.

Deadly Preminition is a very refreshing game to play in between the RPGs that I usually play.

In terms of games that were critically mauled that I enjoyed, I always think of the Resident Evil Outbreak games. I was well aware of their shortcomings; repetition and slow gameplay, but I still really loved them. I've given up hope that there will ever be a File #3, though, just like I've given up on there ever being a sequel/spiritual successor to Silent Hill 2. :(

Critically mauled? I'm sure there's been a few but the top ones that come to mind is:

Bushido Blade (PS1)
Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Wii/360/PS3)

Bushido Blade was an old fighting game for the PS1. Basically you played as a bunch of samurais in a remote area during modern times. The catch? If you slash the right part, you can get an instant kill. You slash the arm, they can't use that arm. You slash the leg, they now limp or crawl around the arena. It was pretty awesome and led to some intense.. or quick, fights. Also you have different characters of different weight classes with different swords. So you can have a brollic guy with a two hander or have a fragile speedster with a one hander. .. Or you can switch it up for whatever reason. It was fun as hell but the reviews didn't agree with it. It managed to get a sequel that was a bit more well received and then the series dropped off the map. I for one would welcome it's return.

Final Fantasy VIII? Well two things worked in it's favor for me. One, I liked Squall and his Gunblade. That man Squall was all business and he alone made the game enjoyable for me. I liked seeing his responses to situations and his sword was really that cool. And two, I'm always a sucker for a good romance story. It's one of my super guilty pleasures. Throw a romance story into a plot and no matter how lame it is, you got me sold. So yeah, FF8 was right up my alley.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was an odd case. It didn't get much love during it's release and I have no idea why. Sure it didn't reinvent the wheel but it did what it was supposed to do well. You played as a Jedi and you tore stuff up. That's it. That's all I expected from the game and it delivered. But you got a ton of people slamming the game, calling it lame and etc. It actually got so bad that I had to submit a positive review of my own for the game to off-set the negativity.

Alright, I'm really gonna push the envelope because I am the only person in the world who will defend this title.

Zelda: Wand of Gamelon.

The game isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Most people have never even played it, they've just watched the AVGN episode and clips from the terrible cut scenes. However, after playing and finishing the game on a genuine CD-i, I had an OK experience, not great, but not terrible.

Its main flaw of the game is it's controls, however, this is because the game is on the CD-i. If you ever played on a CD-i, the controller only has a joypad and two button. For what was available to the system, the controls work as best as they could. If it was designed for a system with a better controller, Once you sit down and learn the controls though, it's not too bad.

In terms of the game itself, it looks really good for 1993. Its soundtrack, it amazing, I actually feel that it is the best in a Zelda game. And finally, as corny as the story and cutscenes are, I found it really enjoyable because it was such a mocky of Zelda. You were essentially playing Zelda the animated series based off a game, the game.

In conclusion, it's not a great game, but does not deserve to be ranked among the worst games ever made. That honor belongs to games like M.U.S.C.L.E and Bioshock 2.
