Wow, this looks really good. Seems like he's taking the weirdness of Paranoia Agent to a new level.

i found that funny, since american animtors work mostly in 3d...far diff from japanimation

Working in 3D doesn't say squat about the writing, though. Also, most studios may work in 3D, but they still limit themselves to low budget films which don't make the most of the medium. Particle effects and lighting don't make up for stiff animation.

As for Paprika, it looks iffy to me. Something about it reminds me of Millenium Actress, and I thought that was his weakest film.

Hope they will show it in theatres over here, but I highly doubt it. I REALLY need to see this!

It's being released by Sony Pictures. All of their previous anime released hit theaters first, I don't see why this wouldn't. In fact, the theatrical release date is May 25th. I wouldn't expect a wide release, though, so it may get stuck at just art house theaters.

I've thought that all American animated movies I've seen lately have had excellent graphics, but really are crap it terms of story. I mean, there aren't any animated films for older viewers, unless you count A Scanner Darkly, which I wouldn't really classify as an animated film.

Still, I thought it was a bit of a low blow from New York Times. Just because American animation doesn't feature naked people being gorily eviscerated doesn't mean that it doesn't have value for adults. And personally, I think Japanese animators are spending a little too much time on the moon.

I think I'd like to see Paprika. It looks trippy. But if it's trippy just for trippiness' sake like so much other anime then I'll be really disappointed.

Very true. Satoshi Kon and other animators don't really like to explain a lot of the trippyness in their films, leaving a very confused audience to figure out what the heck is going on.

Yes, it probably WILL be running in American theatres so lucky for you... but I'm not an American citizen ;) The last anime that was in theatres in the Netherlands would be Howl's Moving Castle, and that was much later than the original release date.

Not that lucky. Most of the anime moves I've seen in the theater were in a small art house theater where the screen was barely larger than what I get with my projector at home. It isn't that common for any anime to hit theaters and if you want to see them on the big screen, it's usually best to see them at big conventions where they have theaters dedicated to 35mm. Unfortunately, it usually boils down to making a choice between picture quality and good voice acting since the theaters will usually favor subtitled anime while cons are usually forced to show the dubs.

With the exception of Millenium Actress, I find most of Satoshi Kon's films to be pretty straightforward. If it does get trippy, there is usually a good reason for it. It's just that some of his work was intended to disorient the viewer and he tends to do so in ways that even American directors often do.

As for other directors and writers from Japan, I still find that a lot of what people call "trippy" are just things which are native to Japanese culture and film. The intended audience has no problem following it, but it's foreign to outsiders, so people call it "trippy."
