The only thing that I don't like about making comments is that I want to say more than "great job".
I really should do that more I suppose, but I want to give constructive feedback.
However I did notice in a new comment I got that it really felt good when the person "interacted" with what was happening. An alien was getting shot by a big laser and the comment was "That can't be good"
I don't know, for some reason I liked that ^^ I should have interactive comments if I can't think of something constructive.
I do like seeing "great job" but I know I can improve and I always think people are scared to tell me something that could help me because they are afraid I may start getting mad or giving them low scores.
But then again "great job" could also be the lazy man's way to compliment you without having to think further so meh :P

I know what you mean! I know it's cool to be rated a 5 or whatever but the comments let you know what people thought of your page. Likewise, when I leave a comment, I want to say what I liked or thought could have been improved and why. I try to leave the kinds of comments I wouldn't mind receiving.

I agree, I love getting comments! The interaction and activity on this site is one of the major reasons that I joined. Posting a comic off into cyberspace is only so fun if you don't get any feedback on it.
Although, it bugs me when I see someone spamming the exact same comment on every comic they see. :/ It just feels like they're trolling for free hits and not actually even looking at the comic page. I also get that vibe from blank ratings sometimes, although I know a lot of people leave them when they don't have anything to say, just to say "I'm reading". Which is fine.

I like to try and leave interactive comments, but sometimes I just have no clue what to say, so I just hit the '5' rating and post it just so the author knows that I'm still reading it. Anyone else do that?

I only have a few readers, but any comment always makes my day. -- Okay, actually, I am elated to see a rating with no comment, too. Shows there's someone out there. o.O I like comments on my story most of all. (Comments on the art are okay, but since I'm posting things I drew many months ago, I don't find suggestions that helpful in general. Though sometimes, it is.)
I usually leave comments about storylines, though if something on the page struck me as really visually exceptional, I let the artist know it.

I agree. I initially came to Drunk Duck because it looked like a good site to set up on, and see if I could stir some interest in Internet Superbuddies. But after I set up and started looking around, and the longer and longer I'm here, the more and more I really enjoy this place.
The forums, the user profiles and friends system, and the comments system all foster and encourage a supportive community for the development of comics. These added features encourage people to get out and look at stuff, to seek help when needed, and to offer help when asked. So I think not only does it help the indiviual grow no matter what level they may be at, but it helps the entire medium grow as well. It's not just a website, it's a community with a passion. :)
And I'm totally hooked on the place, after only a week. I even did something I never thought I'd do and start my own little project, that thanks to the support of the people who stopped to leave a comment, I'm having a blast working on.
I've learned a lot from people around here in such a short time.

I think it's important to leave something to acknowledge the existance of a comic, especially comics that don't get many comments. I know what it's like to ge no comments, because my comic used to have very few readers. It really sucks. I don't like to leave useless comments though, either. I try to leave feedback of some kind, or comment on the story, so people know I'm really paying attention and care about their comic.
Comments I dislike are ones from people who misinterpret things that have been stated clearly, or try to second guess me. The number of people still asking what I colour with, or saying my CG or pencil crayon work is good astounds me, since I've said loads of times now, it's markers. Or people who keep thinking FORTRESS is male, when she's been referred to as 'She' on most of the pages in which she appears, and even revealed to be a mother. That's annoying, I'm always left thinking 'geez, you could at least PAY ATTENTION if you're going to try to leave a comment...Especially if you're gonna criticise something which has been explained already. Second guessers are annoying, because they're all like 'oh, so I guess these guys will be a couple...how predictable,' before anything has even happened!
So far, the only times I've been correctly second guessed have been: once when the situaton was clearly inevitable, and once when the person guessing gave two possible outcomes, and they still didn't get it 100% right. Try not to be arrogant when you comment, it doesn't make you sound smart, it just makes you sound even stupider if you say something that's incorrect.

I think it's fun when people try to guess what's going to happen, because they're usually completely wrong. I like knowing that someone, somewhere, is going to be surprised when what's actually going to happen.. uh.. does.

I don't like disappointing people when they've guessed something's going to happen or be shown and it's not... Hehehe!
Aurora Moon though seems to know my story as much as I do. It's amazing.
Comments are great! I get behind on giving them to other people though... I read a few comics without commenting though, sometimes it hard to know what to say, in that case it's prolly best not to say anything because a bad comment can be worse than no comment.

The only negative aspect of comments is that there are not enough.
It can be disheartening when you work really hard on a particular strip or whathaveyou and you get NO comments. Or, only a couple votes and no words.
I agree though, comments are the best. Especially when you're hungry...Makes it seem like it's all worth it.
I'm also guilty of reading and not commenting...It's hard to provide a decent comment sometimes, and I want to leave something people will appreciate.
I've rambled.

I agree. I find it sometimes difficult to give a decent comment and would hate to spam like kitty mentioned, so I also read and only comment on some top favorites or a comic that called my attention in some way.
I try to point out what I liked about a particular page or what I think could be done to improve it, but sometimes you can't escape from the "great work" standard comment ;)
Btw, I looove getting feedback of any type, so don't be shy :)

I'm definitely the type that prefers honest, constructive feedback so whenever I do comment that's what I try to do. Though there are times (many, many, times,) where I just can't think of anything helpful to say....

I can relate to this more often than not. Like, I spend a large amount of time making another strip, and then I publish it, and nothing else happens. No comment nothing, stuff like that really annoys and, at times, dishearten or discourage someone to make another issue, or make one just as hard, if not harder.
That's why comments are one of the best things the internet has to offer.

I try to leave comments where I can. The trouble is, I never have much to say, and what I usually have to say is pretty shallow. I used to never do anything here without a comment, but then I'd get a comments like, "I didn't even know you were reading!" So now I do give out votes with no commentary -

I tend to give out a lot of "interactive comments," because I'm opinionated and not afraid to put it out, and when I'm reading a comic I'm immersed in, I just start typing train-of-thought comments on every page.
But I think that kind of "comment spamming" may actually make the author dislike me. For example, I must have left 15-20 pages worth of "interactive comments" repeating how much I hate the main character in Ethos. It's not that I consciously spammed... it's just that every page with him opening his mouth reminded me of why I hate him.
Personally I'd love it even if someone spammed comments on my pages reiterating how much he hates a certain character, but also with other comments showing that he's actually reading the comic. It means I'm eliciting a strong reaction and yet the comic keeps them coming back for more. But that's just me, ppl are different.

If it helps, I'm the artist for Ethos, and I don't hate you. lol!
By "comment spamming" I really meant when someone goes around posting "WOW, COOL!" on every single recently updated comic. It gets on my nerves to see stuff like that. =p

Those are examples of comment spamming. Although a lot of people leave a blank comment with just a 5 in it because they just want to show they like the comic and support it but don't know what to say, about 10% of people who 5 and run don't really give a crap; they're spammers. The second example is a classic cut and paste add, that's even worse when it includes a picture advertising their comic. The third is a spriter classic, that's almost always be reported and they'll have their warning level increased. The last one can be spam or it can be honest, lack of intelligent content and all caps points more towards spam though.

Another thing I despise is Anonymous - 1's.
Obviously, they use "anonymous" 'cause they are too full of chicken poop to SAY it and I know I should just ignore it. But, it still irks me.

I agree, comments ARE the best. They're far and away the thing I miss most about not doing a webcomic right now. They're probably half the reason I want to do a new one, haha. Mmm feedback.
I'm horrible, horrible, horrible at leaving comments for other people though. I'm an incredible hypocrite in that regard. It started with my not wanting to leave comments as an admin, but I keep forgetting to use my other account and can't be bothered to re-favorite everything on it, so now it's just because I'm lazy. Looks like I have yet another self-betterment project!

Really? I've never seen those before. On my comic or anyone else I routinely read.
The only negative comments I see are the Ranters. Going on and on about why 'such and such' comic sucks for whatever idiotic reason(which usually isn't even true) just because that comic is doing a LOT better than theirs(and their comic is usually boring and/or stupid too). I've seen some of those on "Hero by Night" and "Craving Control."

Well, I've been pretty deficient on leaving comments myself... I should force myself to do better. That being said, we have a grand total of 2 comments (and one was my own reply to a comment we received!!). So I guess I'm deficient in RECEIVING comments as well!
Maybe it would help if I could get my banner to work, but the thing won't upload. Ah, well, that's a topic for another thread... and it's already up there, I'm just venting. LOL
I solemnly swear that I will try to leave more comments on the things I read, and that I will do my best to make those comments constructive and/or interactive.
