I can tell you right now that all comic artists swipe or trace at some point in their career. Largely this has to do with the demanding deadlines. The questions is how obvious they are about it, and whether or not they rely on it for major scenes.

Yup, it's common among the pro artists to do tracing largely due to deadlines.

Good. It's one thing to pay homage to another person's art or base a pose or action on something that another artist has done, but I'm of the mindset that you should give credit where credit is due. At least admit to it, reference it, and people will probably hate you less - because then it becomes an interpretation, and not stealing.

I think that a little referencing may be necessary for DC or marvel artists. I mean, those types of comics have so many different positions and whatnot and it can't be very easy to know each and every one.

I can't speak for those who literally take a drawing straight from someone else *cough*Todd Goldman*cough*.

Initially I thought it was bad, then I think "why care"? They get their job done, people enjoy the story... Meh. Worse when it's done by dicks like Todd because the copy is the main piece of work, in the real comic artist's case though, the copy is only a small part of the work.

Still, in those cases of Liebfeld, the drawing is usually done slightly worse and the only better thing about his work is the colour, but those sorts of comic artists like Rob don't even DO the colour (not in those examples anyway), so that makes him look even crappier. -all he did was a slightly shittier copy of the drawings.

now you've got me wondering: Who the crap is todd goldman?

i feel cheated, what if you found out that your favorite art is just a trace...you lose all respect for the artist and even begin to doubt the medium. people will begin to doubt the comic industry and read less comics.

why bother knowing how to draw when you could just photograph it and trace it? instead of being creative they just trace it.

Regarding Slam Dunk, I think NBA is being pricks. You literally cannot draw a sports manga without volumes of real life sports action photos at your disposal. You wouldn't BE a pro sports manga artist if you didn't have those ref photos. Who the heck cares if an artist draws a photo pose??? When painters paint a still life are we going to call it plagiarism?

I have several folders of magazine clippings that I keep, of interesting poses and scenery that I find worth keeping. I don't look at it much cuz I CBA'ed, but I do have them, as I thought every manga/comics artist would/should. Nowadays, with Google Image Search, it's no longer necessary as much.

But straight out copying other manga panels, and even entire scenes, yes that's bad. I used to do that (long before I had any online comics), during my comicking growth phases. But I don't do that anymore... Not because of moral inhibitions (it never even comes to that), but because I CBA'ed to spend time searching for references in countless manga/comics, when I can draw it immediately from my head. Especially since I have my trusty Spidey poser figure.
