VERY nice looking entries, Greg. Will you be posting the story details here as well? I'd really like to see more so I can determine just how impossible you've made my chances of winning :D

SDulaney: God, that just looks fun! I can't wait to see more of it! One quick question. Who's thoughts are we following in the caption? On first read, I thought it was the lady ranger, but looking at it again, I think it's more likely the guy in glasses and loud shirt... yes?

Yep. Mr. Simon is the "voice" of the page.

I really appreciate the response to the page guys (and gals). Just think, only seven days to go and then we can un-clench. (Except for the top fifty...but really that will be a whole different level of anxiety. ;) )

I'm desperately hoping that we'll reach that new level of anxiety with our pitch... but I've seen SO many good ones here and in a few other places that I'm too nervous to breathe!

Sorry I'm a little late with my sticky reply.... JAR and Caanan. Great covers. I especially like Caanan's feel for the environment. The gust of wind is a great accent on an already inviting page. JAR: The axe is pretty intense.... So, are the covers what you turned in for the contest?

Yes...I felt it was strong enough to send. Caanan and JAR are both unreal artist and great guys to work with. I think it is hard, unless you do something like DJ did last year, to send one page in and tell the story. Plus I LOVE both those pics. I will post the summaries soon since they are not on this computer. Chivalry is best described as a mutant, street-level book...think female 'colossus' meets Daredevil, Batman. And Warhealer is a 'Fantasy-style Avenger's' team book with Durin Warhealer as the main character. Greg

Just a little character sketch of Kalderan from our comic. He isn't very important in the example page, so I decided to throw some sketches together. We would probably refine all this if we got to pitch our idea, though.

Yeah, that's a good idea actually, I should post some of my doodles and revised designs here.

I like how he looks, what do you call his race in your comic? Also, any chance I could cameo him in Galactic Hub Serreven or Cosmic Dash?

I knew I should've tossed in the description from our website:

noneedforbushido.com
Here we have Kalderan, a major character that managed to make only the most subtle of appearances in our submitted page below. Kalderan is an Altaran, the first alien race Hewey comes in contact with. He has been assigned the rather boring job of monitoring Earth for several months as punishment for disobeying orders from a higher military officer. Kalderan is a bit hot-headed and itching to get back home to a more exciting assignment.

I'm fine with cameos :) It would be a shame if we completely lost early in the competition and no one knew who he was, though :p

Come on! The Platinum contest is just one venue of many that everyone has to show their projects. Like I told my writer Eric, I'm more excited about showing this to our agents and editors that are already interested in our work than I am about this contest. I am very appreciative about the publicity this contest is already getting us, but man, I'm excited to shop this stuff around! My (long-winded) point: If your work isn't seen in Platinum, it'll be seen somewhere else. Have you guys seen how many publishing houses are out there? And now seems to be the time for indie publishers, too! We're living in exciting times as creators!

I know where you're coming from Mr Krinkle, this is just one opportunity of several, and if I don't make, it's not like I don't have options. I'm already in print for starters through Radio Comix, and I'm working on a thing for a certain magazine with KC Green.

Regardless of these things, I'm still giving this my all.

Oh, it's definitely smart to put everything you've got into a project like this. It's also very smart to always have plans B, C, and D itching to take over.... Send us links to some of your already published stuff!

One of my more random messy warmup doodles I tend to do when I brainstorm, I want to do a Chupacabra story eventually. It's just a weird example of modern-day folklore.

As for Cosmic Dash, my print comic, I have a listing with links to the issues it's in here .

Agree! With the growing interests on comic books and the proliferation of POD and whatsnots, it is an exciting time for comic creators!

Wellllllll....I guess I'll throw in my two cents.
Or rather...my two entries.

So first is 'Gone'. Written by me (Ryan MC), with pencils by Don Edwards, inks/colors by NichX, and letters by Chris Studabaker.

What's it about? A VERY SHORTENED version of a pitch goes something like this:

Imagine waking up in the morning and there isn't a sound. There are no birds chirping in the trees. There is no dog barking in the yard. You can't hear the neighbors yelling at each other through the wall. It seems like the most peaceful day on Earth.

That's what Chaz Derry finds one morning when he wakes up and finds that every living thing has vanished. Without a superhero in sight or a politician to explain what has happened Chaz roams the streets trying to decide what to do next with a life where no one else appears to exist. When he is able to find just one other person, an older African-American fellow named Davis Angle, the two decide to travel around the United States to attempt to find any other survivors. As the two come up short they come to the quick realization that the rest of the world's population is simply...gone.

HOWEVER what the two are about to find out is how the largest mass murder was pulled off and how the duo may be two of the last people on Earth...but their days may be numbered.

And then there is 'normal JOE'. This is also written by me, pencils by Bill Mitchell, inks/colors by Gustavo Santome, and contest letters by Chris Studabaker.

normal JOE is all about Joe Ryan who is having a great time in his first semester at New California University. He breezes by as he makes new friends, hangs out with his geeky roommate, and tries to work up the nerve to ask out the lovely Madison James. Joe has always enjoyed the life he lives because no one knows that he is secretly Joe Kopec - son of Mr. Amazing and Transport Girl, brother of Frigid Female and The Whatsit who are also known as America's first superhero family The Amazing Quartet!

What happens when the nation's best kept secret is suddenly revealed?

When a villainous gang swoops down onto New California University to kidnap Joe, he's forced to call in his family and his "true" identity is quickly broadcast on every station. All Joe's ever wanted was to continue his normal life outside the spotlight, but now he's become the most famous young man in the world. So what happens when supervillians all come out of the woodwork looking to take out poor Joe? And though Joe has no powers will he have it in his heart to ever become a hero?

Thoughts?

Good luck to all of us!

I partnered with James Babcock and took a shot.

The Synopsis:
The Serpent
Created by James E. Babcock, and Mark D. Ashworth

Written, Drawn, and Colored by James E. Babcock.
Lettering and Inking by Mark D. Ashworth

A convict injured while out on a work release program is recovering from an industrial accident. He has survived major experimental surgery to repair his shattered body but is left quadriplegic, and Mr. Shawn Marsh hopes he would not remain in this condition forever. However, what he is not aware of is that the “improvements” his doctors made in him were not to “fix him” but to “use him” for a sinister purpose.

When he sleeps, a biological computer system -- as well as several mechanical extensions hidden in his body -- takes over and he’s sent out on missions to steal industrial secrets without his knowledge. He has become the Ultimate Industrial Spy that no one can stop! His mission is to supply his creator, V. Vargas with enough secrets to bring all of Man-Kind under his control.

I compare this story to that of the Frankenstein Monster, except the monster doesn’t know of his own existence, he is being used without his consent for industrial espionage, and he is all ready alive when “created”.

As the story unfolds two powerful forces are at work to end his usefulness to his Master: a rival organization of would-be Illuminati who want to capture him and take him apart to see how he works, and a separate group masterminded by Vargas’ previous victims who want to be avenged.

While stealing from chosen targets when asleep (including the other bad guys), when awake Shawn remains motionless in a hospital bed -- until he starts getting clues about what he’s become from a spy within Vargas’ organization, placed there by the victims, who want to turn the creator’s creation against him and stop his plans.

As Shawn begins to understand what he is, gets access to the computer in his head, and regains voluntary movement, will it be enough to help the Monster break the hold his Master has on him, or will this knowledge of what was done to him drive him insane first? Can he escape without becoming a prisoner to the rival evil forces? Why did the other group send a spy who is a lady who dreams of becoming an investigative reporter?

The first story arc will involve Shawn Marsh breaking free and trying to find a life with as much normalcy as possible, but quickly various “evil forces” will try to collect him for their own quests to control the world. All he wants is to avoid such confrontations, but he finds that he can’t and often winds up hurting innocent people. He is neither Hero nor Villain, he’s just someone who can’t escape his destiny -- or the "spy," Alice Kiddy, who keeps asking questions for her blog.

I was damned sure I'd win this year until I saw other entries. Even ones that arent on this site. There are some awesome pages out there. You can see some of my art on my comic Ogre which isn't lettered. I have to stop being lazy about that, sorry.

I came up with the a pitch for Tranny The Transexuals Transgendered Travels.

Ha...reminds me of a dream I once had.

Greg- No doubt that you've got some absolutely fantastic artists. Truely amazing...I'd love to get them on a story for me. :)

Ryan - Normal looks fun.

Zenstrive & Mole - Both great stylistic works. I also went with a heavy stylistic work. Sometimes it works to be more than a little different from the average books. You guys definitely stand out.
