I haven't really posted any examples yet but I've been experimenting with colored pencils lately. I think they look good on screen and have a little more soul than (at least my) photoshop work does.

Anybody else use colored pencils?

Can anyone point me in direction of well-done drunk duck comics that are created this way?

They do have more soul in my opinion.

I use crayons, but only for covers.

I know Harkovast uses coloring pencils, I recommend checking it out as the colorist is quite talented.

More:
PIT_FACE uses some pencil colorin' (I think) for Putrid Meat. And Ruby is done in colored pencils.

I use only 'em for covers and "extras". They're not my favorite, but I'm more proficient with 'em than I am with markers or paint (or- God forbid- digital coloring!) so it's the best option I've got for making decent color work.
Some of my better examples:
Here. and Here.

I'll move this to the Art section...

Hyena- BRILLIANT work there. LOVE those legs!

Coloured pencil in general is a pretty good medium, it has a huge range of colours and you can apply them very accurately and neatly, more-so than paint. Being a dry medium you have a bit less risk, especially when trying to retain the integrity of the original image.
If you want better gradations in colour and colour mixing you can use blender pencils- that's a trick an old girlfriend and master colour penciler taught me :)

As for "soul"... Fricken nonsense. The thing about pencils, crayons etc is that they apply to the surface imperfectly, giving you a lovely rough, textured effect. That has the effect of giving broad spaces of colour a more interesting and detailed look than if it was just smoothly applied colour. Basically it gives a sort of similar effect to fine cross-hatching.
You can get that effect digitally, but you have to know what you're doing if you try it.

Thanks for the move, it does fit better here. Also, it's hilarious that you called me on using "soul". I kind of winced when I typed it. It was worth it though. lol!

Ozone: Heh. Thanks! I just realised both of those "examples" featured, um... strippers. Oops. Well, the ladies are my favorite thing to draw... lol!

The precision factor of pencils is definitely a plus over a lot of media, although I've seen people who are really good get remarkable detail and subtlety with watercolor or acrylic inks.

And, yeah- the blenders are key! I just recently discovered 'em- it's helped a lot with filling in those pesky "carved" erased lines, or making flats when you need to. (Although that still takes forever!)

Another thing- I always keep my pencils as sharp as I can- I'm talkin' about stoppin' to get 'em factory sharp every minute or so. I learned this from doing litho, where you can't get tight drawings (the grain of the stone is a lot like a medium grained paper) unless you've got a tiny point. It's sounds kind of wasteful, especially if you're using expensive pencils; but I think it really makes the difference.

When you say "blender pencils" it makes me think of dumping a bunch of pencils into a blender and then... no idea what then, I guess buying new ones :D

I wish there was something like mechanical/automatic colored pencils. There are supposed to be blue ones for sketching but that's it... well, I hate sharpening any pencils. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE sharpening pencils.

Did I mention that I hate sharpening pencils?

Well, I do. A lot. No, even more than that.

...cause they always break :P

Give me a set of pencil leads in many colors and I'll happily draw you a color picture :D

Coloured pencils are something that's always best used with another media in my mind. To me having that white grain showing through makes an image look desaturated and incomplete. I always lay down a base colour with acrylic paint, ink or markers to start with. It gives so much better, brighter results in my opinion. With the base colour you never have to worry about using blenders or overloading the paper to the point where it won't take any more pencil with just the fill colours.

I've never figured out how to use colored pencils... I don't have any (that might be one reason why) and the last time I can remember using them was in elementary school, and they were painful.
I think paint is more forgiving ; ) especially oils. You could cover up any sort of boo-boo with oil paints, including mass 911 or JFK conspiracies.
I
I know there's some strategy to colored pencils (I've seen some awesome cp work) but I just don't know where to start with them. (any good tutorials?)

I used to use colored pencils ALL the time. They were only Crayola though, and I sucked at coloring. XD

It doesn't exactly help that it was crappy art, and on lined paper. But I think, if done right, colored pencils can look as good as any medium.
