Browser-based games.

Recently, Lord Shplane posted about a browser-based game called Kings of Chaos . Being a fan of games like this I tried it and found it to be a lot of fun. But it got me to wondering what other browser-based games are out there.

To be frank, I've only played two, Kings of Chaos and The Urban Dead and I didn't really care for that last one because it relied too heavily on team-play and less on casual gaming.

Are there any other really good ones I should try? I've been going around the net and have found a ton of games like this, from RPGs to strategy games, and even some oddities I couldn't have imagined.

So what are your favorite browser-based games and why do you like them? Remember, browser only; nothing to download.

Oh, just out of curiosity, how high ranked are you on KoC?

Oh, I guess I should have been a little more specific. I didn't mean Shockwave, Flash, or Java games. Sorry but I was looking for primarily text-based games like my two examples.

Getting higher all the time. ;)

Actually I can't recall exactly how high I am. 10,000 something last I checked, but I'm having fun so it doesn't really matter.

Just an Urban Dead player myself. Been in it for going on two years now. The game is getting an increasing obnoxious WoW-type player in it, but it's still got me hopping on each day for fifteen minutes. My guild helps to run one of the longest running safe towns on the troubled zone borders for some time now, and I take a bit of pride knowing that new players might have a better shot at learning the game there than getting munched on immediately.

Heh, my E-Penis is bigger than yours. I'm 8000 something. Also, I've already surpassed my commander, I could probably kick his ass right now. And I have five officers.

But that's ok, you'll get up there eventually. Not to mention that there are around 8000 people that can kick my ass as well. lol!

See that's where I didn't like Urban Dead. I joined a guild and found it to be way too complicated and overly detailed. I had to do way too much in one day to justify me playing it, and going alone was just boring. I liked the idea of the game, I liked the actual gameplay (although you correctly note that far too many players are annoying), but I couldn't get into the game.

I like to roleplay a bit and working with the guild I was I didn't have much opportunity for that. It made things dull for me because I hate level-grinding.

I can understand that, SG. I would describe Urban Dead as being pretty newbie unfriendly, in all truth. Odd rules, tough level climb for minimal gain, mercurial/socially maladjusted players along with very little in game enforcement, it goes on. Not one of my friends who tried it managed to stick with it for longer than a month by my understanding.

I originally joined it for the zombie / survivor experience, but that's kind of faded in the last year to 'who best exploits shoddy code and throws epic numbers of players around' to do such and such. It's very 'us versus them', rather than eeking out survivor in a zombie filled city. In theory, the zombies could actually 'win' the game, but it's impossible for survivors. All they can do is keep it going and endure. And in addition, they have to deal with spies and PKers.

Level grinding in that game is a matter of doing it with a plan. Healing, via First Aid Kits, is easily the most effecient starting build for survivors and then building up to advanced handgun usage by ammo replenishments via 'Shopping' at the mall versus other forms of damage/experience point equivalents. The Fire Axe is good til then, otherwise. Once you get the experience point climb out of the way, you can focus more on the bigger picture of the game.

I play four characters in Urban Dead, all survivors, all in guilds.

One is part of the aforementioned safe border town. The guild is reasonably friendly, but militaristic in terms of its organizational effeciency and active leadership. They're cautious and neutral in most things. We've outlasted a few Big Bash runs, handled ourselves out of PK wars, and even dealt with a few traitors. And still, we carry on. We're not glamorous or super popular, but we do our job good. It's also my favorite.

Another is a member of a small rag-tag guild of dedicated but very outnumbered players in another border town, more hostile than the last. The lack of resources in that town on top of hostile zombie spill overs make it a constant but exciting fight. I've had some of my most fun there repeatedly tricking zombies into attacking unimportant buildings I would ultimately barricade up and leave empty. This guild is less experienced by far than the previous, but they're good sorts.

A third guild is extremely tiny, composed of an ally I know from the first guild and about 1-2 others. We surgically work in troubled areas as needed to make sure that town doesn't suffer tactical loss from certain buildings, as opposed to protecting the entire town. We're a bit nomadic in this one.

The last guild is a fun loving rp guild with a very active rping forum. It does the basic town maintenance and has some PKer enemies, but they're pretty much on the ball and really focus on the characterization of their avatars rather than worrying about the next zombie attack.

I don't think so. I find them a perfect time-waster when I've only got a few minutes to spare and not enough time for a big game. They're deeper than Flash games and the like but simple enough to understand and play (at least with Kings of Chaos) so that they don't get in the way.

And as for being boring, well that's a matter of opinion and I like to think that my little campaign to destroy everything in sight is going fairly well in KOC. I've even got in a rivalry with one player and actually enjoy building my army up.

And I just realized what that acronyms as. Now I like it even more! :)
