Books based on games

Have any of you ever read a novel based on a video game, what's your opinion this whole trend?

I've read quite a few, the three Halo books, about five of the WarCraft books, one of the StarCraft books, and right now I'm reading Resident Evil: Zero Hour.

Personally, I think it's very interesting to read books based on games, as they add more to the story and characters. A good example is StarCraft: Queen of Blades, which expands upon Raynor and Kerrigan's relationship and the alliance between Raynor's Riders and the Protoss much more than the game did. The only three characters in SC that I would call "heroes" (Raynor, Tassadar, and Zeratul) all actually stand out as character in that book.

The Halo books add alot to the plot, so it makes much more sense, and the WarCraft books are very good expanded universe stories.

well, borders must be obeyed, like not every game should have a book with it. I coudl go my whole life without reading a book about Grand Theft Auto.

I read the book based on Doom... that was as depressing as the game. I can't believe I actually read it... That's such an embarrassing thing to admit.

Although, I'd LOVE to read a book based on Duke Nukeum 3D. lol!

The books that are sidestories or prequels to the games are the best.

These ones are my favorites:

StarCraft: Queen of Blades
Resident Evil: Caliban Cove
WarCraft: Lord of the Clans
StarCraft Ghost: Nova

The next "Video Game Book" I'll read will probably be StarCraft: Liberty's Crusade.

I doubt it could be any worse than the comic based on Doom.

I read about three of those Doom novels. They started out kind of fun because when they described the environments and rooms you could recognize places in the game. But they started to get worse and worse and after the third one I started to wonder why I was even reading them. I should have wondered sooner. I wonder how they turned out.

HA! Well I wanted to know if they could create some kind of motive and back story for the Doom events, and the stuff with the demons... I was a bit disappointed when they were just made into aliens.

A comic? o_O Freaky... I didn't know they had comics out as well, but it follows I suppose.

I could never figure out the game Myst (it was too.. complicated for ten-year-old me) but I LOVED the novels!!! They were simply fantab! The first one was about this kid named Atrus (well he grows up, but...) and his life in the desert with his grandma. and then one day his father takes him away and they write books!! But books where you invent a world and THEN ENTER IT!!!
Ooh and atrus had a kitty named Flame...
...but he killed it. by mistake. ~_~ the Myst books were just great!!! I think that's the only game-based book I've read... unless Jumanji counts, hehehe!

You are huge! That means you have huge guts! Rip and tear! Ooh! Here it comes! Here comes the night train!

That is the greatest comic ever made. No plot, no logic, just constant catchprases with loads of violence. To those who 'get' Doom, that comic is the greatest piece of comickry of all time.

And I read the first three books based off of Diablo. They were actually VERY VERY good.

...the artwork... So very, very bad... :(
That was made 10 years ago? It looks like it was made 60 years ago!

I just borrowed Kingdom of Darkness from the library today. Please tell me that the plot isn't centered around Dragons. The WarCraft books by Knaack are all Dragon centered.

On a side note, I've yet to read a StarCraft book that wasn't good. Probably because there's a slim chance of an actual sequal, so they need to use books to tell us what happens.

To be fair though, I've only read Ghost: Nova, Queen of Blades, and Shadow of the Xel'Naga.

*vomits all over self*

wow... I think I need to somehow find a BFG. A Big Friendly Giant, that is, whose cheer and fun can erase the memory of effing "Doom".
Honestly, I wish that guy had died. he was evil.

Man, when the guy goes off on protecting the planet's ecosystem in between gutting demons, I had to crack up! That made it worth reading the crap.

Nope. No dragons in Kingdom of Darkness. Just loads of awesome plot.

Everyone
Doom comic = Bad!

Take into consideration that the Doom series had no logical plot at the time and focused entirely on pointless over the top violence. Honestly, the comic really captured the feel of the classic games IMO.

Most awesome thing evar. They should have just put in one panel where he's shredding on a guitar and killing demons at the same time.

"DYNAMITE!"
It's a comic!
