Well... it's hard to pick the favorite, for various reason.

I could say Final Fantasy IX [en.wikipedia.org] because it was the first FF game I ever played. Yeah, I know, it's not really the best one in the list and some of you are probably gonna come out of the woodwork now to say how stupid I am for daring to put that title on the top of the list but I have fond memories playing it. It was also the first game I've ever played that never seemed to want to end. Every time I finished the big quest, a new and bigger enemy was revealed and the stakes became higher. Despite feeling like I was stuck in the never ending story, it never got boring and by the time it ended, I got a bit sad. I had taken such a huge journey with the characters that the game revolved around which allowed me to get to know them. Ending the game was like saying goodbye to your friends, as cheesy as it sounds (hey I was a kid at the time). It was a totally new experience for me and this game is probably largely responsible for making me more interested in adventuring games.

I went through a retro phase, several years ago and played allot of emulated console games, which allowed me to try the original FF games. Out of those I will put Final Fantasy VI [en.wikipedia.org] on the list. I liked that game enough to seek out a copy of it for my Playstation.
Those were my two cents.

Product Placement
FFIX

and

FFVI

Good choice of ff6 for the retro and yeah my first final fantasy was 4. I rented it as a kid and was disappointed because i heard the ff series had revolutionary graphics. Although now that i look back it did for a snes game. I then went on to buy a preowned copy of 7. Which i later sold and bought a few years later off ebay again. Although i remember how i managed to play 9. I traded panzer dragoon for it from a guy in my class and i loved it. Until i got to the end of disc 2 and it had a massive crack in it. Although i just *cough* aquired it legally *cough cough* later on when i found out the psp could run psx eboots. Still havent finished it yet but i plan to some day.

And 6. Great story line, brilliant characters and great visuals for the snes.

Also
by the time it ended, I got a bit sad. I had taken such a huge journey with the characters that the game revolved around which allowed me to get to know them. Ending the game was like saying goodbye to your friends, as cheesy as it sounds (hey I was a kid at the time).

I still get like that. I mean theres rearly a chance to see the old FF characters in new exciting adventures unless its gonna be remade or Dissidia which lets face it. Most FF veterans dont and or wouldnt own a psp.

Kingdom hearts is excluded from the list by the way. Seeing as it isnt an FF game.

I was a fan of Final Fantasy since the first one on the NES. And I continued to play the ones that came to America. I have no struggle to choose my favorite, FF6. I know that there were probably too many characters, and when you compare Kefka to later series villains he seems more shallow and simple, but the scope of the game and the story itself are something I really enjoyed.

The funny thing about FF7 is that I was about two-thirds the way through the game when I suddenly got sick of Japanese RPGs. Suddenly the random enemy attacks felt like a chore and a cheap way to extend the game time. Plus it all just felt so pretentious. I never finished FF7, so it's a good thing I was able to watch my friend beat it. I haven't enjoyed a main Final Fantasy title ever since.

I liked 7... :(

Although after they made the movie i think it just became all about Clouds emoness and one thing that annoys me is a lot of people who rant on and on about the movie didnt even know about the game or still dont know. They fucked it up with that. But Crisis core was amazing for a psp game.

Moving on. The main games in the series just seem to be going down hill after enix joined up with square. Just look at 12. The only real exception to this is 10 i think.

FF7 was definitely a well-made game. But if you picture yourself eating a whole cake, you're going to get tired of that cake some time. I just happened to get tired of that cake at the seventh slice. Most other people started playing Final Fantasy games later and have plenty more enjoyment in store. In fact most people I talked to played FF7 as their first FF game.

I prefer the very first one. Back when I first got it the game was the hardest and longest RPG I played. Of course the other reason why it's my favorite is because if not for that particular game the other FFs wouldn't have existed as they are now. :)

I liked the red one because the blue one had too many glitches.

Also, where can you find the control module?

Billy vs. Tree -- The epic struggle of boy versus tree.
Sonic Colores -- It looks like it's going to be a good game because I love how the way it makes me grow.

I heard that Momar King of Foon has it. :(

I never really played those games. I liked the other ones like the Phantasy Star series and the Shining in the Darkness series.

I really liked the 10 because it's the first one I played, also the first time I played a game where the lips of the characters would move when they talk(even if it wasn't always timed right). I wasn't used to play in a game where you really are in a complete story and I liked that aspect... until I played the game again and realized you couldn't skip the hundreds cinematics. I haven't played a lot of any other game of the series, only watched the movies.

For overall experience, probably 10. I wouldn't call it the best in everything, rather than one that averages high in most categories I'd consider significant.

Final Fantasy changes so much that it's hard to relate one game to another, let alone see them as being part of the same series. To me, they're different creatures in nearly every way minus a handful of reoccurring intellectual property notions like Cid or Chocobos. Sometimes I have to ask myself, rather than which has the best story/characters, but which new defining gimmick worked best.

Really wish they'd start to remember the fantasy emphasis again. It's been kinda post modern/sci-fi happy for a while now.

ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

I don't care what anyone says. The battle system in 12 was brilliant and I loved the game. I played it to death.

I think more people had more issue with the gambit system than the battles anyway.

I'm a sucker for Cecil, so 4 is my personal favorite... Though we all know which one was the best in the series...

I'm also impressed by FF2....

I'm with you there! :D Absolutely LOVE FF 12's battle system :3. I also enjoyed playing 7 and 9 ^^. I got the new FF 13 game last week and am enjoying that so far too xD. It's not exactly the best but it is fun :p.

I also liked FF10.

Having played most of them I have an opinion. Final Fantasy Tactics.

Not the poor gameboy advance version about book world kids, the playstation or PSP one. That's the best. It's not Disgaea or Front Mission level customization, but something about it really is enjoyable to play. The storyline is hilarious/dramatic. The gameplay is strategic/challenging. And most of all, the game uses sprites and 3D at a time when that wasn't popular to do.

If only more games realized you didn't have to be in full three dimensions.

There is nothing hilarious about the storyline of Final Fantasy Tactics. It is extremely heavy and dense.

That's a compliment.

FF6 i think even i never beaten it. xD But the storyline was pretty awesome and my favourite part must be the ghost train. i was truly impressed with this.
FF7 is also good... and the first one i did play on. :)

i hated FF12.. did look too much like Star wars to me and Vaan.. *shudders*, battlesystem and.. retarded villains and this did ruin FF12 for me.
Now i don't think FF13 will be good at all. what if it does suffer similar problem as FF12. Squarenix. you FAILED!

The train part was fricking EPIC! Also liked the end where Cyan has to watch his deceased family take off in that train. As he's standing there, looking over where the train was, his teammates tell him to take his time. You, the player is then allowed to control how long he stands there and watches the tracks.
Those were my two cents.

I can't possibly choose ONE favorite Final Fantasy.

My favorite FF game is... FF4, FF6, FF7, FF8, FF12, and Final Fantasy Tactics, in no particular order.

I was pretty disappointed with FF13, to be honest. I finished it, but I really became sick of the linearity, and not understanding/caring what the heck was going on in the story. The battle system was cool, though I'm not convinced it allowed me to concoct any deeper strategies by limiting my control to one character.

Probably because I'm an old man used to playing an Atari at the time, but I remember playing VI and being moved by how beautiful the opening was. (It was also my first FF experience, having just come off of Chrono Trigger).

I've found my enjoyment of them has gone down now that I have so much less time to devote to them, but I really like 13. It's not the best, but I like it better than X-2, XI and XII.
God needed the Devil, the Beatles needed the Rolling Stones, Hakoshen needs me.
I'm the enemy he requires to define him.
Soon or later, he'll bring me back to life again for another epic encounter of shouting about power levels and grimacing.

XIII was pretty good, and I liked XII.

I look on VIII the most fondly though since it was the first I ever played.

I'm gonna go with VIII.

My personal favorite would be Final Fantasy VI, it was the first one I played and which made me love the series also id blame Nobuo Uematsu for sticking my nose in every FF games.

My most time spent one would be Final Fantasy X, around 400 hours o_O I did farm everything leveled all my character to the max and beaten Nemesis after 8 retries.

My least favorite would be Final Fantasy X-2, I didnt like the soundtrack of that one and it kinda felt like they tried to westernized the story.

Zack Fair is my favorite Final Fantasy character in all the series.

Wow, most people disliked X-2 for being far too Japanese. Hell, it was practically a magical girl series. That combat system had so much potential, though. Too bad they squandered it.
