Yeah that's what I wanted to say: Dark City is about as sci-fi as Secret of NIMH.
Matrix 3 had one chance to redeem 2 and 3 at the very end. However, they messed it up COMPLETELY. I could not believe my eyes. I thought I saw their ending, with all the foreshadowing I thought I saw. I was thinking, "well at least the ending is gonna be cool... WHAT THE **** WHAT STUPID ENDING WAS THAT?!!?" This was worse than Lucas misses.

Has anyone mentioned Mirrormask yet? Because that one's great.
Yeah, it wasn't bad except for the the end
that revealed it was all just a dream (stupid, stupid, stupid!)
If we're using loose enough definitions of fantasy to include sci-fi, I would submit Babylon Five as one of the best. Not a movie, but still. Loose is loose.

Princess Bride.
I was gonna say LOTR, but that just beats everything.
Inconceivable!
Oh hell yes.
MirrorMask is excellent, too, though it hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. And of course Terry Gilliam's "Imagination Trilogy" (Time Bandits, Brazil, and Munchausen) should be included high up there, although Brazil isn't technically a fantasy movie. (Not in the traditional sense, anyways, but still...)

idk if Gattaca counts, but I loved that movie (aaahhh Jude Law, why oh why are you so amazingly hot?!!?!). Other fantasty movies I like are Pan's Labyrinth, erm... omg the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe!!! ... but not the lame-o live-action one- the 70s cartoon one.(http://imdb.com/title/tt0079474/ ) My best friend had it on tape and my sister and I would go over her house and just watch it all the time... ahh, childhood! <3!
And Puff the Magic Dragon!!!! It was made-for-TV but it was still a movie! god, I watched it kinda recently... and it was JUST AS GOOD as it was when I was like four or five!!!
And two more favetastic fantasy films: "Harvey" and "Being John Malkovich"!!!! (yeah... "Harvey" as in, Jimmy Stewart's giant invisible rabbit friend Harvey...)

To get back on the Storyteller-series metioned earlier, I found the whole episode with 'The Soldier and Death' over there. It doesn't have an embed-code, so I'll just post the urls over here:

Oh, how I love it so. I've been watching it over and over again.
"Where the devil is that devil of mine?"
"The news whispered from one of the Tsar's fifty wives to the other. Spread through the town as fast as gossip! Wich is what it was, and nothing spreads faster."
