I finally saw the preview and it was terrible looking.
May have been fine and dandy to do this for a kids movie like Polar express but not the classic Beowulf legend.
I have to agree with a lot of other posters in this thread, hollow, clonky, miscasted, etc...argh!
No one has really done a good adaption of Beowulf.
Disappoining because I really loved reading it back in English class when I was growing up and had been one those stories that just flipped a switch inside me and inspired me in different ways.

Jesus christ everything looks so lifeless.
Why couldn't they just use real actors instead of replicating people in CG? Everyone has such souless eyes. :\
Agreed.

I am so sick of hearing that word from every period movie that came out after Braveheart. I don't think LOTR had that word, thanks be.
LOTR was probably the only CG movie I liked. Most likely because most of the creatures were of a fantastical element, so there wasn't anything I could base my judgment upon. That, and you could tell they worked damn hard on it. The whole thing with the Massive simulation engine was awesome.

I'm really afraid that this thing's going to be a bomb. Beowulf yelling "I. Am. Beowulf." seems like a desperate attempt to make the story "actiony."
Also, 10:1 they kill the Christian themes throughout the story. Although, who knows.
Dunno... just not feeling it like I was 300 and LOTR.

The original Beowulf myth had no Christian themes anyways.
That's what I thought as well.
The original poem is documented as one the oldest and longest major surviving work of Anglo-Saxon and Old English poetry. But per Wiki...which may be wrong, it says there may be Christian themes [en.wikipedia.org].

Not really looking forward to this movie. I was disappointed by 300 and this movie looks like its eager younger brother.

There are Christian themes now. Thousands of years of leaving it only to monks to preserve/transcribe the story can do that.

Hahaha, he has the same hair and beard as me... except with a fatter, less pointy face. lol!
I feel bad for sub though... that's a bit embarrassing. A whole different movie.
But then Sub did say "Like this", which could imply he meant that it should look as good as a scene with a real actor like that one.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Still, I've read a bit about that other version before and I must say that it sounds a hell of a lot more impressive than some silly cartoony version.

mlaiI don't know, but I'm pretty sure it got a wide release in its country of origin... and probably the other Scandinavian countries too. The comments on the Amazon site seem to suggest it was also screened in Canada, and if that's the case it probably just got limited screenings in indy type cinemas. From what I hear the US doesn't have many of those compared to other countries...

It's just one of those things... Films like that tend to fly under the radar because the US movie industry is geared toward bigger films, mainly US made. :(

That image of Butler threw me for a loop for a long time. I was thinking "Wow that looks real good! I guess this movie will be ok after all..."
Well, I saw the trailer for the movie for the past few days. Trust me, the movie looks nowhere near as good as the photo of Butler, obviously, because it's not real, and you can tell visually. It looks like ok videogame cutscene material. Not even great videogame cutscene material.

Sweet a movie made of video game cutscenes thats trying to imitate 300! Which itself did the usual movie adaptation move and added elements that had no reason at all for being there that completely undermined the story! Also how could they break the phalanx! Even for dramatic purposes, it would've been much cooler to see them hold their perfect formation. Or am I the only one who gives a darn about history! It was a cool action movie though.
You know they're making a game of this, which will probably not be a good game at best it could be a playable fantasy/action game, but this CG stuff is basically stiff video game characters: the movie. I didn't like the Final Fantasy movie they made like that and watching "Machinema" is right up there with "cutting yourself" for the dumbest ideas a person could do. It might look like a very overbloomed and bumpmapped video game, but end of the day thats all it is. The novelty wore off after Toy Story. Its over for CG movies.
HPK, the oscars are baught and paid for. Movies are made to make money, not win awards. If a movie is made to win awards, then thats a pretty shallow movie masquerading itself as "artistic" and "thought provoking." I for one will be watching the sci fi original TV movie version of Beowolf, because it has real people. And they look very real and move in an almost naturalistic way!
In fact, I'm done with fantasy films for the year. In fact, most fantasy stories strike me as girly and effeminate. Thats why I'm not big reader of Niel Gieman stuff. I'm officially wanting sci fi movies now. My most anticipated upcoming film is the direct to dvd Starship Troopers 3, featuring the return of Casper Van Deen as Jonny Rico. You want to talk about instant awesome? There it is. That and Southland Tales, Richard "Donnie Darko" Kellys sophmore film, which stars The Rock. Something tells me The Rock will out yell Beowolf any day of the week! Also I'm looking out for I Am Legend with Will Smith. Vampires? Zombies? Mutants? Does it matter what it is he fights in this remake of a remake (Omega Man with Charlton Heston) of an adaptation (Last Man On Earth with Vincent Price) of a novel? Just seeing Will Smith walking around with a shotgun in the trailer was enough to get me interested.
I'm also more excited about Wolverines solo film than I am Beowolf. Not because its written or directed by anyone I give two shits about, but its got Wolverine, assumingly, killing people. He killed quite a few people in the last few x-men movies, while yelling I might add, but he had to share the screen with the leser X-Men characters like Cyclops and the small british Juggernaught bitch.
I'm just so pissed off at CG movies. Its like a cheap gimmick that everyone wants a piece of. If theres actually a story to tell, it could go somewhere. Beowolf is only two pegs higher up on the food chain from shit like the Jerry Sienfield Bee Movie or Shrek, mostly for being based off of something epic. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Beowolf will be the most awesome video game sprite movie ever, but until I see it, my opinion ofi it is negative. Strongly negative.

Neil Gaiman is a big reason why I'm going to see Beowulf. I have nothing against chest-thumping, high-testosterone flicks, but that kind of stuff gets tiresome after awhile. That's why I had no desire to pay any money to see 300. I'll be disappointed if Beowulf turns out to be nothing more than the loud, obnoxious smashfest they're marketing it as.

Saw it last night. I think it tells Beowulf's story very well. Only thing I didn't like is he said his name alot, and I mean alot.
Beowulf said his own name more times in that movie then people that refer to themselves in the third person normally do.

So he's like the inspiration for the entire pro wrestling profession?
-Is the movie good?
-Did the CG bother you?
-What format did you watch it in (35mm or Digital)?
-Do you think it would've been better if it was mostly live action (like LOTR)?
