I've been a long time Beauty and the Beast fan. Not a fan of the Disney movie, no, of the story itself. How beautiful it is that a women learns to look past the ugliness of the outside, and into the heart of the true man inside.
But, its so hard to find any comics or stories related to the subject, anyone have any out there?
And if you want to say something about the story itself, go right ahead! ^_^

I like Beauty and the Beast a lot!
I just saw a high school play on that. It wasn't half bad.

I'm thinking about going to a Broadway production of Disneys version, but I would just LOVE to see someones original own version of this beloved tale. ;_;

Its not hard at all, you just don't know how to look for it. Most stories come from a few fairy tale/fables like Beauty and The Beast, the bible, and Shakespeare.

I loved the Disney movie. Disney's Belle is one of the only Disney heroines I liked. Intelligent and independent without having to be preachy about it. And the movie doesn't strut that or apologize for that in any way; it just is.
Bravo for Marine! Y'all know what I mean.

Heehee. I never watched the T.V. show. ^^; *Though, I found out an episoded aired on the day I was born.*
Belle really kicks it in the Disney movie. The girls before her we're all just pretty princesess used only as damsels in danger. You really didn't know if they had anyother character than to just be pretty for the camera.
But Belle isn't just pretty, she's smart, caring, understanding, and holds a much stronger role than her cousins have before her. Plus, she had longer time with her prince and got to know him over a period of time. Much different than before. ^_^

Anyone here familiar with Angela Carter's writings? If not, you should check out the short story collection called "The Bloody Chamber". It's her own, dark and heavily symbolic versions of popular fairytales, including Puss-in-boots and the Little Red Riding Hood. Then there's "The Courtship of Mr Lyon" and "The Tiger's Bride" - "Beauty and the Beast" retold in two very twisted ways.

The original story was good. It's been retold a lot of times in many different versions with lots of slants and twists, and even the original is derivative of the style of many other traditional stories, but it's a nice, solid tale.
On the idea of Fairytales in general, I once listened to a female author talking about how she'd written a special collection of fairytales with girls as the main character because she said there weren't many... But all the most popular fairytales that I can think of do have girls as the main characters; Red riding hood, beauty and the beast, the little mermaid, Snow white and the Seven Dwarves, Repunzal, Rumplestilstkin, the Princess and the pea, the Princess and the Golden Ball, Cinderella... and so on. The only Main boy character ones I can think of right now are Pinochio, Jack and the beanstalk and Puss in Boots.
Very funny really. I know there are a lot more of each, but those are some of the most popular by far!

I think I've heard something about the 'Tiger's Bride'... Some where...
But thanks! I'll check at my local libary to see if they have her book or not! ^_^ I've never read or really heard of her work, but I love the idea of twisting things to your own version.

I'm suprised that there's someone else who read the original! Not a lot of people read fairy tales unless its been Disneyed, which is such a shame! Theres a real history and meaning to each tale when you really read about it. ;_;
That's really strang indeed. I've read fairy tales form around the world, and almost all of them had female heronies in them. There are male, animal, and other heroines, but females have always injoyed the spot light of leading roles in fairy tales. *Either good or bad. In Grimm tales, they depictated a lot of clever and smart girls, but they had a share of dumb, and evil girls.*
But everyone can all stand up and say that females have almost always been the main characters in fairy tales, not a lot of people even know who's Puss in Boots! Even back when women were just stools to men, they always we're rulers in Fairy Tale land.
Plus, its more magical when women are the lead roles. ^_^

Men prefer to drink beer and watch TV. It's the women who talk to snakes and pluck apples (and get into unnecessary mischief).
