I just read this on Yahoo main page. Kal Penn (Kumar) is quitting acting to work for Obama. Sounds like a sequel, but this crap is true.

He's basically assistant to the head of Public Relations as far as I know. They're in charge of making the president look good in his speeches, public appearances and in general.
Overall, I think it's kind of a weird selection if a somewhat logical one. If you want to look good publicly, who's better to hire to help you do it than an actor? They've got all the necessary experience in projecting a image and character. I just wonder if Kal Penn is perhaps not the best actor suited to the job considering his career has pretty much evolved around pretending to be a stoned loser.

He campaigned really heavily/ visibly for Obama, so I don't think it's necessarily a huge surprise. I dunno, maybe it is- I guess he's giving up a lotta dough, huh?
As I understand it, he's to serve as a "liason" to Asian-American and Pacific-Islander groups, as well as the performing arts/ entertainment industry. I think it's basically doing outreach and publicity to those specific constituents- letting people know about policies, listening to concerns and questions from those groups, etc. This kind of position also gives folks the impression (right or wrong) that said "liason" is a voice for their particular interests and issues, that has the ear of the president and will lobby at their behest. I dunno how many "associate directors of the White House Office of Public Laison" there are in the administration- the word "associate" suggests to me that there's like, 40 or something; like a law firm. So I'm not sure it's a highly important position or not. I would guess not. Seems irresponsible to to have an actor as the head of anything political, even if it's "publicity". ;)
