The n*word DOES have meaning though. I still believe it does have a history and thus, has a meaning.

Sort of like how you cannot yell the word BOMB in an airport or yell FIRE in a movie theater. Those words have meaning for the specific time and place. The consequence will be panic and chaos...maybe an arrest or fine for you.

If you yell out the word n*gger in a room full of blacks - there will be a consequence to your actions.

The big banning words debate I hadf this with someone once, of course they didn't get it. But it smacks of 1984 for sure. You can only say what we want you to say, rebellion will be impossible as no words for it will exsist. that sort of thing. Any slander word against any ethnic background is wrong for sure but banning it makes people say it more to spite such rules. best way to end any form of it is to desensitise it...i'm way too serious...

"Bomb" makes you think you're going to explode and "fire" makes you think you're going to slowly burn to death. Sorry, I don't get how n* compares.

Banning a word wouldn't stop people from saying it. Infact it would probably give it even more power. If it's said too often now because it's taboo, imagine what making it a crime would do. If you want to remove the impact of the word, don't make it a misdemeanor, change it's meaning and the context in which it's used. Every hack comedian in America is working 'round the clock to desensitize their audiences to the "n-word".

All insults have no meaning. They just mean "insult". You can call anyone anything and it still will be offensive. I could call you retarded. Even if you aren't retarded, you'd be offended. Even insulting words no longer have power and are usually just used as a joke, unless you're extremely immature and think you'll actually win something with one. This word, which I still would feel uncomfortable saying thanks to all the bullshit drama surrounding it, is no worse than any other insulting word.

I find the term "Honky" more offensive then the N-word. Honky was the name given to a white guy for the sound they make during sex! Odd!

The N-word is just a funny word used for ages, that classifies a black person in a negative way... like "Chink" (sorry).

But I dont agree banning it.

Censorship gives the word more power. The NAACP worked very hard last century to block all sorts of images and words to help start a clean dialogue, but it's actually a little awkward now.

If I support a Latino/Jewish/Chinese event, buy eating foods associated with that race/religion/nationality I don't think they'd have a problem. But if a white person makes a point of dressing and eating in perceived black culture themes for MLK day or Qwanza, they're called racists.

It's awkward. If you can't enjoy another culture, you can only ignore or hate it.
