Just keep it really basic; Best Hand Drawn Comic, Best Sprite Comic, Best Art, Best use of a Sprite, Funniest, Scariest, etc...

This guy sound like he has the right idea I say use all these.

Hawk
Best Art
Best Story
Best Character Design
Longest unbroken updating streak
Best Male Character
Best Female Character
Best Villain
Best Page Layout
#1 Hunk
#1 Babe

Categories to consider for main awards:
Overall, Strip
Overall, Novel
Action
Comedy
Slice-of-Life
Drama
Pure Manga (comics that purposely follow manga formats, not "look kind of manga-ish")
Sprite
Clip Art (photos, clip art and such)

I wouldn't recommend we do TOO MANY awards though, or we risk diluting the whole thing. Also, we need official graphics for the awards that proud authors can post on their site.

How will these awards governed to prevent excess self voting or having a non drunk duck member from coming in and repeatedly voting for a friend’s comic???

Could it be set up 1 vote per email address which would cut down on fraudulent votes?

Or maybe just moderators and administrators vote? (A lot of work for them to be fair though)

With over 4,000 comics and strips even if you have 30 categories there is still only a small percent winning again I like hawk’s idea plus some best new categories again I think Hawk is in the right direction

Best new comedy

Best new action

Best new drama

Best new horror

Etc.

For comic and strips under a year old

Hawk

If we're doing serious tones than you don't want too many but just enough. I suggest splitting it up into a few stuff.

* Best of Fantasy
* Best of Real Life
* Best of Sprite
* Best of Sci-Fi
* Best of Horror
* Best of Abstract
* Best of Other
* Best of Action Adventure
* Best of Crime/Noir
* Best of Humor
* Best of Manga
* Best of Political
* Best of Spiritual
* Best of Romance
* Best of Superhero
* Best of Western

Then just some broad tones.
* Best of Comedy
From all the comics in the "Comedy" tone and the best one.
* Best of Serious
From all the comics in the "Serious" tone and the best one.
* Outstanding Achievement
The best comic, doesn't have to be a comic, just the best one.

I think that should do it. I hope that you do it, this idea really interests me and it would be fun. If it works I'm going to do a special "Oscar" style strip for my comic. Good luck.

Sorry, I'm annoyed and have these two cents burning a little hole in my pocket, I guess everyone likes money anyway.

I have to voice protest against the 'manga' and 'sprite' categories. It's probably just me that they make no sense for, but it's sounding like there may as well be a separate category for; 'best comic drawn with the right hand', 'best comic with prominent use of hundreds of specks for detail', 'Best use of Artline pens', 'best comic drawn in a style used by W.B.', 'Best drawn in Corel painter' or even 'best comic that makes prominent use of old soviet poster style vectors.'

Hell, there's no specific style, story, or character type for either of them. They're just two needlessly specific categories, focusing around something very fickle, and frequently debated.

Again, it's not that I don't like either, it's that the award categories are complete nonsense amongst the current line up.

The reason I included them is simply because they're categories in DD's database and excluding them is biased. Sprite comics and Manga are still comics regardless and to remove them removes a portion of the community. This is about everyone.
Yoshi Sprite" are absolutely absurd. At the Oscars and any award ceremony they don't have, "The Best Line" award or "The Best Use of a Yacht".

I think categories like mine that are broader, stick with DD's site and are more open give everyone something to be nominated for, gives everyone a chance and gives the winner something to brag about. "I got voted the most funny comic in DD 2007".

Remember, a lot of people pick categories that they feel they could win, it's how the world and the brain works.

You missed argument I was making. 'Sprite' and 'Manga' are not separate beings from everything else, why does a sci-fi comic drawn using traditional manga conventions belong in a different category from the rest of the science fiction works. At the Oscars, they also don't divide films that have been created using a majority of Japanese techniques.

I didn't say that comics using sprites or drawn in a manga likeness should be dropped from the awards , and it wasn't directed solely at you, I'm saying that it's ludicrous to separate them from every other comic. There are romance, action adventure, and science fiction manga works, the same for sprites. Giving them their own special placing for something as shallow as medium or inspiration, is what I was referring to when I said, "There may as well be a separate category for best use of Artline pens or best drawn in a style formerly used by W.B."

Not to be a complete English Nazi, but "Sprite" would be a subgenre--and "manga" in this sense would denote a certain art style inspired by Japanese anime. If you're going to get that complicated with it, then logic dictates that you should also have a "Best Western-style illustration" and "Best European-style illustration."

To me, it makes sense to go with these broad genres:

Drama
Action-adventure
Horror
Sci-fi
Humor
Fantasy

Thus, manga with werewolves would be classified as horror, comics with Sprites would be classified under fantasy--or drama. Of course, these are only examples, but this would make it possible for all strips to be evaluated on a level field.

Just... my two pents. Disregard at will. lol!

Yeah,
I guess it's all down to how you categorise your comic. As the example said, if a Werewolf Comic was drawn in Manga Style would it be classed as Manga or Horror? When it comes to Sprite Comics however, I believe regardless of what they're about, they should be classed as Sprite Comics. Idunno, we'll see what happens.

I have reasons for not including all those.

1. The amount of genres is fairly large
2. The terms for the genres are very broad (I was stretching it to add "Romance")
3. Some of those genres have hardly any comics in them. (Although if it's gonna be a "first place, second place, third place" type of deal, feel free to add Spiritual ;) )

I really like the idea I've read a couple of times in this thread, "Most improved". because honestly, sometimes the difference between a comic's present quality and past quality is astronomical. recognizing that writer/author's resolve to push themselves harder even if the comic isn't perfect seems like an excellent award.

Nicely said. (...and I agree)

The list in this post is for awards that have been justified by members of the community and are most likely to end up in the actual awards themselves. There needs to be that push to actually get these awards on the ground and off it's feet.

How amazingly in-depth.

OK, obviously "Best Art", "Best Layout", and "Best Writer" should be categories, it just seems like common sense. These are three of the most important aspects of webcomics... I think.

Best Art is still incredibly vague. Best Layout works, as for Best Writer? That two would need some redefining.

in light of new artists to drunk duck, i think that there should be a catagory for best new artist. new as in, artists who had just come within the first 3 months or so to drunk duck (or whatever time slot you chose). i say this becuase for an artist that is new to drunk duck, they havent had much time to get exposure to the rest of the DD community as others. its all in the mind of fairness!
