While 97% of those questioned could identify Adolf Hitler from a photograph, those who could not mistook famous figures such as Winston Churchill, Salvador Dali and Albert Einstein for the dictator.

I can see that. We haven't been taught any of that stuff in school, although we celebrate Remembrance Day every year and attend assemblies and stuff. The only reason I know what Auschwitz is, is that I read a lot.

No matter how stupid that seems, they probably know somrthing you don't, so don't laugh.

As adults this whole thing seems kind of stupid, but when you think about it the names of specific concentration camps don't really come up in discussions in secondary school. I feel like kids concentrate more on the living situations of Jews and Germans during WWII, and the whole focus on names/places comes later.

Or that might just be my school. I'm interested in how other schools approached this topic.

As long as the students understand the basic principles of what occurred at the time the specifics really don't matter. As long as they know about the Holocaust and the horrors of the camps they really don't need to name them all. After all I doubt anyone here could without looking it up.

What about Sobibor, Bergen-Belsen, Treblinka, Theresianstadt, Buchenwald and about a dozen others... you want to see blank stares?

How about showing them a picture of Charlie Chaplin and Hitler and asking them who was the dictator of Germany...

Most schools here just focus on how horrible it was and ignore anything unrelated to pointing out how mean everyone was to the Jews. So they completely gloss over everything involving actual places and events in favor of saying sorry.

It's a great story and made for a really good movie with Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer. One of the few to recognize that Concentration camp guards were often Ukrainians.
