Gopala-(Indian origin)Cow protector-being how cow is such a sacred animal the name could have an underlying tone, given India is one of the predominant countries in your story.

If you want to give him some latin flavor some options are Arrendo, Dardo, Valencia.-these I didn't get from BTN. Good luck with your comic.

Something that's always helped me is to go to www.babynames.com and type a character's qualities (like "dark" or "joyful") into the "search meanings" toolbar. That turns up some interesting ones!
