Animal Crossing: Exactly how is this fun?

People seem to get so sucked into animal crossing but as far as I can tell, all you do is try to make money by fishing or digging or fruit picking or use your money to collect things and pay nook...right?

Fishing was fun at first but...digging and picking fruit is just pressing one button over and over again. What do YOU (yes you, you right there) do when you're playing animal crossing?

I used to play the one on Gamecube; I spent most of my time gathering random crap around town to sell for cash, or making designs. I stopped playing after it just became a hassle to play the game enough just to keep the town itself in decent condition.

I always found Harvest Moon to be more entertaining. Somehow the menial tasks felt more like I was accomplishing something in that game.

That game is as addicting as crack (for me)... who can say why. I certainly don't know. But I loves it. Usually I play it for a month or so, get tired of it, leave it, and go back to back to it for another couple of months.
First, it is adorable.
Also, there's the special events, and the changing characters, and... I really don't know. But I do love Animal Crossing. I think it's great.
I also love Harvest Moon - and do the exact same thing, play it for a month or so, get tired of it, then need to go back to it... I'm far more productive in video games than I am in real life.

I had it for gamecube and I played it so much. Then I stopped. In fact when I logged back in one time my town was to crap.

Then I bought the DS version. I played it WAY too much. Then I stopped for about a couple monthes. Then I got the erge to play it again and I am hooked again.

I heard that there is going to be an Animal Crossing Online game for the Wii. It will be update with new stuff all the time. That is nuts.

People will really get sucked in.

When I was told about the game I was like..."this looks really stupid, I can't play this"

Now I am addicted.....

Hm... I'd probably be more interested in the game in a dedicated online capacity (not really in the "hey, I'm hanging out in your town!" of the DS version).

Yeah, it was the lack of interaction that got me with Animal Crossing. I played the hell out of it when I first got it for GameCube, but by now I'm sure my town has gone to pot and half my people will have moved away (I'm sorry Mitzi I do love you, you're the nicest!) :(

An online version though... that sounds like it would be an enormous hit.

Basically, mLai. Personally, I can enjoy either game for a short period, but I can't really get "into" them.

I liked Animal Crossing in both systems, and if an online Wii one will exsist, I think that would be a lot better for the game. I can't explain why I like it, I just do.

It all depends on what kind of a gamer are you. If you like completion, then it will drive you nuts to finish it off. I have the DS version and I used to spend like 10 hours a day on that game when I first got it. I paid off my loans, finished the Fossil collection, donated a crap load of money to the poor town, got some rare flowers, and caught and donated a bunch of fish and bugs. I just wanted to keep going and going, but when my fiance moved to NyC, I had to set the game aside to help her and stuff. Haven't had time to pick up the game since.

However...

Now my brother is addicted to it like crack, getting all the K.K. songs and trying to get out feng shui up.

in my mind its a bit fun, but its not my type of game. For me in the life simulator catagory, it's the sims 2 all the way.
im funny, but not good at drawing and i hate emos and depressed people (you know who you are)

One of my friends also just doesn't get animal crossing. His reasoning was far better:

"So, you move to a town, have no money, and basically the game is all about working hard and menial low pying jobs to pay back your debt? Yeah, that's called my life."

That about sums it up. Games should have you doing cool shit that you'll probably never do in real life or always wanted to do. They shouldn't force you to try and scrape by in a depraved mockery of RL.

Harvest Moon > Animal Crossing

This is right in every way. The thing that bothered me about Animal Crossing is that nothing really every happened. You play errand boy a few times, you fish a lot, but there's no real character development. As opposed to Harvest Moon, which is awesome.

oh yeah. I love Harvest Moon for the SNES... :D

I liked how you were basically this boy who gets to move out on his own, but if you did poorly you were basically forced to move back in with your parents. argh. and having romance and pets, animals, etc.. nice stuff.
I'm on hitatus while I redo one of my webcomics. Be sure to check it out when I'n done! :)

I haven't touched my Animal Crossing in about 3 weeks. I'm sure my house is overrun by roaches and the town is covered in weeds. :(
