I bought this game way back when it first came out. It freaked me out more than Resident Evil did when it came out later. Though people think that the lack of music during gameplay was a letdown, I found it unsettling.
The story:
You're a rookie on assignment with a civilian military team tasked with clearing out a rather large moonbase called Hamlet. However, when you get there you find out that there are weirder things going on. You pilot a mecha called the Griffon VF-9 that transforms, but not even its power is going to prepare you for what you find inside.
Cue the crazy guard robots, the out of control automated base defenses, military combat vehicles that seemingly move by themselves, the freaky biomonsters and one creepy bioengineered virus...
Oh... and here's a link to a gameplay video.

LonnehartHmm, the VF part of the name sounds very similar to the whole Robotech/Macross name for their mecha fighters. Pluss, the mecha is based on the same design. Interesting. Was it a straight rip-off from Macross or is there a tie-in somewhere?

There is no tie in. Although I think these turn into some sort of tank, not a plane. Also, there was a remake of this game on the Dreamcast, as well. Not one of the best looking games on the system, but at least it was an upgrade from the PSX version. It still had no music.

It's an original. None of the Macross related stuff is in this game. VF is a universal designation for all transformable mecha (as far as I know); it stands for "Variable Formula".

In the original Macross, VF stood for "Variable Fighter". It was changed in Robotech to "Veritech Fighter". Generally, most anime don't use it, even for transforming mecha, or at least when they do, it stands for something different and is intended as a nod to Macross.

Broke out the game AND my Playstation (my PS2 is out on loan). I admit it feels like a slow FPS with RPG, Combat Mech and Survival Horror elements (computer leveling, limited weapon carrying capacity and supplies/ammo). One of these days a great game will come out when a good combination of those elements is put together. One can only hope...

the lack of music is unsettling, but being a giant robot seems to take away from the horror.
