going away - The Game Room

Am I the only one that thinks the term "gaming" sounds idiotic?

I like to play video and pc games. But I would never say that I was "gaming." No one ever "games." Lots of people PLAY games though. The word game is a noun. When people go to live in a house, do they say they are "housing"? How about "carring" for those who are driving their cars?

Fooding
Toothbrushing
Bedding
Desking, hey are you a desker?

I am just really sick of the "gaming" industry.

"Player" is already taken. So we gotta settle for "gamer" and "gaming".

While it is a valid point, I'm so used to the term already it doesn't phase me. For the record, my sister and I do use the terms "fooding" and "bedding" from time to time.
That's "Dr. BlkKnight" to all of you.

But game can also be used as a verb, specifically, "to game". It's similar to the term "dye". Now, "dye" can refer to an object used for changing the color of fabrics/woods/whatever, but "dying" refers to the process itself. Or "cook", which is both a noun describing an occupation, but also the process that individual goes through to create food, or more directly, "cooking". How about "Fishing"? It's really as natural as anything else in our language.

Now that you mention it, I hate the term "chewing gum". The gum is not chewing!

That's the wonderful thing about languages, it's always evolving. However, I can see your point. Turning a noun into a verb seems to be nonsense, but there also have been many instances of this. The usage of the word cop to refer to law enforcement is derived from the verb cop, which means to take or seize.

Hmm...I'm chew-gumming...

chewing refers to the action you do to the gum to seperate it from bubble gum as in "chewing gum is for chewing" and "bubble gum is for blowing up"

I think we should use the N word to refer to gaming and gamers, that way it will take the negative connotation away from it.
