Maus, by Art Speilgman. About the life of his father during WWII. You have to read it to belive it.

American Gangster is apparently good, I haven't seen it yet

TV Shows
Mob Stories. It's on the History Channel and details real life mobsters and their careers. It's actually pretty fascinating.

The Goon (Dark Horse. Although if you're looking for realism this probably won't help.)

The korean flick Infernal Affairs is a really excellent crime movie, if you've seen the inferior, soulless American remake "The Departed", the twists and turns might be ruined for you though.
