Gday,
not sure if this is the right place for this.
A few years ago when I was working on a comic strip (yeah it got published in a couple of papers), I would need occasionally to invent a one-off character for the joke. Sometimes I would simply come up blank so would do a 'scribble-drawing' to develop a unique character.
I also 'challenge' students in my classes to try and draw a scribble that I cannot draw a character from. Then I get them to challenge their neighbour. If the neighbour succeeds the challenge is thrown back at them. The loser is the first person who cannot create an effective character from the scribble.
It is a great game for an imagination 'workout'. Below is an example. Give it a go. You will surprise yourself.

A Great 'Imagination workout' and game to play by yourself or with others.

heheheh , i was working on this scene that takes place on a crouded train full of aliens and this is the perfect way to randomly generate some one time characters . it beats my old method of altering my state of mind and stairing at old rugs , maybe , i haven't tryed it yet , but it looks cool

hmmm didn't Yoda say something about this: failing because you say it can't be done?

A great deal more than a lot of people I know. I have this feeling that Confucious, Lao Tzu, Sun Tzu, the Buddha, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were all actually hand puppets.

hey instead of just gawking, itd be awesome if we did a version of this. like someone draws a scribble and the next person to post turns it into a drawing, then does a scrible of their own for the NEXT person.

Me and my little sister used to do that when we were younger. Its not so fun making characters out of scribbles by yourself.

Great idea NickGuy.
By the way, Scribbles gets very offended being referred to as a 'puppet'. He prefers to be called a 'Metacarpal Thespian'.

I do that when trying to come up with an idea for vehicles. I never thought about doing it for characters though. :P

Must be imageshack, since I was super-careful to format my image tags like other posters' and I couldn't see 'em either.
In other news, after weeks of looking at these forums, only today did I notice your avatar's eye rolling. It shocked me to the core, I tell you!

Used to play this with my cousin when we were young. One of our rules was you couldn't have crossing lines in the scribbles. Makes for some more interesting shapes imo rather than the same blob over and over.

So Professor, just out of curiosity do you ever do "Exquisite Corpse?"

Ah hah! Boy does THIS bring back memories. My dad introduced me to this game when I was a kid. I'd scribble for him, and he'd turn it into a character. It kept me entertained for hours when I was a kid, and it just blew my mind how he could see cartoon characters in the scribbles. I had no one else did this game and I haven't played it for years. XD
I remember trying to vex my dad with whacky scribbles and I never could. Eventually he got me to draw characters in the scribbles (still very young, we're talking like seven or eight..). I remember playing it after with my siblings as well. Heh.
Thanks for the nostalgia! I'm going to have to play this in opencanvas with friends.
