Not a dumb question - a very very valid point.
Most sales for online comics are done from their website. But if you want them in stores you have to ship them to a distributor. That's a lot of headache and usually they'll take over 60% of retail. Thus, a lot of peeps don't do it. Plus dealing with freight, plus politics. And... there's only one distributor. Truly.
Look up Diamond Distributors. And then you really just have to go from there.

really not lefarce, that's what I am trying to achieve by opening this thread: how can I go print efficiently and effectively?
Going lulu will be the lowest cost per book, as you can only order 10 books and give them to reviewers all over the world and then launch a propaganda machine to announce the availability of your book on lulu. But this way have the biggest, most intrinsik problem: the price of the book itself. It is three times as high as bulk printings !
Going traditional printings require much money and effort and headaches, but you'll have lowest price per book available. Then you got to conventions and such, and perhaps running a propaganda machine every day till your copies sold out!
See, either way has their own wins and loses.
Well, what I do so far is cost calculatings and print-house surveying.
Last offer was US$ 3500 for 1000 copies of 200 pages A5 sized full color comic (Tarung Jakarta ). Sigh, that translates to seven months of my paycheck... (I live in Indonesia, btw), and calculating all cost, I have to sell it for US$ 10 for international market. Still lower than majors prices, but I have to run an effective propaganda machine if I have to sell 1000 copies !
It's a headache, but hey, it's what living is, right?
