I want you guys to list some of your favorite artists of all time, people who are a well of undying inspiration. I'm talking artists that cause an electric excitement to surge through your drawing arm! Please post examples of their work in this thread, no url links, only images!!!

I want this to be a graphic intense thread, that takes forever to load!

I'll start it off:

>
He is an indy comicbook artist and does 2 amazing books called King City and Multiple Warheads:

>
He is a comicbook artist/animator and is a co director and character designer on the boondocks:

We-ell.... This is hard, but I'll try to sum it up.

Ivan Bilibin - who illustrated a whole lot of Russian/Slavic fairytales.

Ivan Tzarevitch, the Firebird and the Grey Wolf, for example.

Paul Kidby also does gorgeous work:

and Yoshitaka Amano:

There's a whole lot more people on the list - Miyazaki, John Bauer, etc., etc., but I'm in a bit of a hurry so I'll have to come back and complete the illustrated list later. :)

YES! MOAR!

Heee. :) Alright, then!

John Bauer illustrated so many fairytales during this career that his name has become almost synonymous with them:

Bauer more or less defined the way whole generations of Swedish people see trolls. Too bad the poor man drowned. :(

Also, I recently fell in love with Leon Bakst, because of his costume/stage designs for the Russian ballet:

And who doesn't love Miyazaki?

And, while perhaps not on the same professional scale as the above, but certainly on the same level where skills are concerned: Justin Cherry (aka "Nivbed" ) -

Yeah. Artgasm.

I figure this thread is getting old down the line and thusly ignored, but I'll chime in my two cents regardless giving it a bump with substance. I'll try to keep the images I include to a minimum, since I've never seen forum threads that take forever to load as a particularly smart way to communicate.

I like Lesean Thomas's work, not just because he's also a Bronx native, but because if his book is any clue, the man is absolutely committed to drawing. You could only do yourself a serious disservice by not going over this mans work and taking some cues in your own.

Next up is an artist from the UK, Phillip Jackson , aka JollyJack. I came across his work when I was really deep into my following Fred Perry. Not all that elaborate an artist by any means, but if you check out his website, you'll find that the guys a fairly witty writer and what he lacks in skill he more than makes up for in other ways.

Next up is a French artist by the name of Kevin Herault , aka Trantkat. His site is probably not what you would consider work-safe, so there's your heads up on that end as to why you'll see no images of his here. The mans sense of aesthetics with his character designs are nice and appealing to me, plus his influence from Anime & Manga are obvious.

A guy I used to kill time with in IRC, Jason Robinson , aka Crybringer. The guy never had a website to speak of, but he updates his deviantart gallery enough to suss out your own opinions of his work.

Yukito Kishiro , the guy who created Battle Angel Alita, Aqua Knight, and Ashen Victor is a favorite of mine. I've yet to figure out what it is about his work I like the most, but I think that his writing compliments his story telling fairly well, plus he obviously researches what he writes, which is a plus.

I've got a few others, but I think it's best to keep it limited to what I've shared already and give other folks the opportunity to share what they like too. I just hope I don't have to edit this.

very cool, I especially like the first of the images you posted.

I know Jason Robinson, he's a phenomenal artist. We are both sitting at the same table space at the last couple of conventions I was at.

he has a very vicious comic coming out soon.

Paul Kidby also does gorgeous work:

As far as Discworld goes, I'll always prefer the original stuff by Josh Kirby. Kidby's stuff is how I'd approach characterisations like that... pretty conventionally really.

But Kirby added a spice of amazing in that mix :)

Kirby's stuff is pretty awesome, yes, but he never really clicked with me. Kidby, on the other hand - while his art is far more conventional - seems to have strolled through my head with a sketchbook and drawn the characters precisely how I see them (with the exception of Nobby Nobbs).

Meh, each to his own, I guess.

I dropped by the thread to post yet another one of my favourites: Mike Mignola.

Oh, neat thread! I'll try and limit myself to only a few artists... there are so many I could list! :)

First up, the amazing Becky Cloonen, who I've admired for ages. Fell in love with her art as soon as I saw it in Channel Zero: Jennie One. She has the most amazing sense of timing and structure on a page - great layouts that are minimalist and perfect. Love them.

(She's on deviantart, btw... http://www.stabstabstab.deviantart.com and also has her own page at http://www.estrigious.com/becky/ )

Then of course, Ashley Wood... the artist behind Popbot and Lore, among other things. I've admired him for years for his ability to work in several mediums and describe masses and masses with very few, very deliberate lines and blocks of colour. He also has the spectacular sense of timing and layout (often the same thing in comics!) that I admire so much in Becky Cloonan.

Also Phil Hale, an amazing (though slightly pretentious) painter who I admire intensely and have done for ages. I need to figure out how to steal his hands. Like, soon.

You can see loads more of his stuff here: http://www.allenspiegelfinearts.com/hale.html

Enjoy!

This is cheeky of me, but I thought I'd pimp just one more artist. Cheeky, because he's a friend of mine (we went to art college together). But! I think you'll enjoy his art, and I do really admire him!

Paul Duffield is kinda new to comics - as in, he's only been doing it professionally for about three years now. He started out by winning Tokyo Pop's Rising Stars (UK), and since then has done a bunch of stuff, including a manga version of The Tempest. He's currently working with Warren Ellis on a free-to-read online webcomic called Freakangels.

I admire him mainly for his tenacity. His art is beautiful, and his timing brilliant - he's also done some great animations which really showcase his ability. However, it's his tenacity in making a career out of his art that is really admirable - he's worked really, really hard to get where he is now, and it seems, for him, the only way is up! I wish I had the confidence and the determination to do that same.

I admit, myself and a few of my other art college chums (we all keep in touch) are just a little jealous! ;P

Freakangels can be read here: http://www.freakangels.com/
And Paul also has a website here: http://spoonbard.com/
And a deviantart account here: http://www.spoonbard.deviantart.com

And finally! (sorry, I'll stop replying to this thread eventually) I thought I'd add a few of the people I watch on deviantart, because these artists are a constant inspiration to me, and regularly fill me with awe. Most of these people are pros.

I'll just put in one picture per artist, 'cause this list is likely to be long and I don't wanna swamp the thread too much...

Cuson: http://cuson.deviantart.com

Darren Hopes: http://plainme.deviantart.com (warning - possibly NSFW. Lots of his art is 'erotic' - not outright porn, though, just some nudity).

Paul Davey: http://mattahan.deviantart.com

David MacDowell: http://davidmacdowell.deviantart.com

Janaschi: http://janaschi.deviantart.com

Jae Liu Wubao: http://gunnmgally.deviantart.com

Fayrenpickpocket: http://fayrenpickpocket.deviantart.com

Heather Horton: http://heatherhorton.deviantart.com

Erik Jones: http://theirison.deviantart.com/ (a lot of his stuff involves nude women, NSFW, you have been warned!)

Geirrod Van Dyke: (God, I love this guy's paintings! He's done a lot of comic work too, most notably Spawn, as pictured below...) http://geirrodvandyke.deviantart.com/

Stanley Lau: http://artgerm.deviantart.com

(Can you believe this is actually a painting?!?!)

...and I should probably stop there, though there are tons more I could show you! :D If I carry on I'll be here all day...
