I think if this "judge veto" method is decided upon, it should only be allowed in the highly questionable categories to prevent judges in other categories from going trigger-happy (not saying they would, just a precaution) and vetoing out comics that obviously belong in a certain category.

Basically the judges would appeal to JNP to remove a nomination and JNP would have final say.
It is not perfect, but it is the best solution available I think.

I agree with niccea. If one nominee was removed, then the next one in line should step up.
The main point here is, after all, not to keep unfair ones from getting judged, but to make sure unfair ones don't exclude eligible ones.

What ever was the 6th place community project should be added in as the 5th nomination.

I'm still annoyed with the Geminni thing and the fact that some others were nominated for everything and weren't really something that should go in that catergory. And I won't stop until wrong is made right.

I'm a bit surprised there was no limit to how many spots a comic could be nominated into. To me it doesn't seem like a good scope of the community when comics that normally drift in the 'popular' category are filling thirteen or so spots each. And not always ones they qualify for.

I know this is mainly a popularity contest; but if a comic had been limited to the four slots or so that they got the most votes for - there may have been more diversity in some areas. I'm sure people won't agree with me, but that's my personal thought. XD

I agree with Aelwyn, although it's too late for this year. If all the awards end up going to the same few, it's not very interesting. Also the same comes back each year, which makes it a lil predictable.

I'm not saying the popular comics shouldn't get awards by the way, just that it would be nice to make a little more place to those who are trying to make their way.

yeah, it gets really boring when the same top5 comics appear in pretty much every category (including ones they shouldn't even be in) just because they got a billion fans that can vote like crazy. I was hoping to see some interesting comics pop up but it's just the same bunch over and over again.

Perhaps next year, maybe limit the amount of categories for one comic, or if you won a specific award one year you can't win it the next.

I'd agree with that. One solution in the future would have nominees, who want to be considered for an award, enter their own comic in only four categories for consideration. A comic can only be on four category lists so the creators would have to choose the categories in which they want to compete wisely. Category lists are generated based on entries. Popular votes are cast to decide the final five in each category. Judges decide the winner.

I realize this might be more work for the organizers (JNP!) but it might produce a better cross section of comics considered for awards.

I think these discussions are good but more applicable to next year. We need to make note of them and have a thread for discussion after the awards are over this year. Always seeking to tweak and improve.

However, for this year, with the voting done, finalists announced and the methods decided upon, I think the best course of action would be the judge veto option OR possibly tweak the obviously wrong categories before the judging starts. But we'll see what JNP thinks would be feasible and fair, since the work is on him and any flaming will be directed against him (or the comics -- which is also unfair, since nominations are the fans' doing, not the creators' ). I'm sure JNP didn't expect all of this discussion in his absence, but something will be done asap and before judging begins.

I'm not sure how we decided on using the top five. I think it was for ease of judging. We have to have a cap on it. We simply need to get nominees somehow for the sake of our panels, and in the categories with only four, all other potentials had just one or two votes. Filtering by the people doing tallys is supposed to keep the obviously wrong ones out but not the marginally so. It was a problem this year since only one person was doing it. -- Also, we could opt to be more critical and throw out the ballots that fill them out with the same comic in every category. I think I would do that if it was on me, but I'm meaner than JNP.

(For the record, I have said before that I disagree with disallowing the same comics from winning each year. As long as a comic is active, it should be perfectly acceptable. Judging is based only on work over the course of the year, and people who keep a project going strong and of good quality should be completely eligible. Again, that's really off-topic for this year's contest. Heh.)

Anyway, all that can be modified for next time. It was put up for discussion and nothing like that was talked about, so we left things mostly as they were. We'll have a "suggestions for next year" thread after the awards.

Understood. I just wanted to clarify that that was not the intention of this process. :) And we hope that having a top 5 provides a good cross-section for judging.

With the variety of categories, however, a top 4 to 6 might be more reasonable. Some get more strong contenders than others. In the case of a tie (unless massive), it might be better to just let all the tied comics go to judging rather than run a tie breaker. -- Those decisions make it less about popularity but give more weight to the judges, and some people want to have more of the popularity influence. So, it's a balancing act.

First off, congratulations to everyone that earned a nomination!

I wish I could have been more help, but I'm still a little new to this place and am unaware to how these awards are run (at least the preliminary stages). Maybe next year!

And just to contribute to the category debate: I don't agree that a comic should be limited to the amount of categories they can apply for, but I do agree that the judge panel should disqualify comics for appearing in the wrong ones. Then they can just take the next best placement to fill in the spot before the nominations are put up. This was mentioned before, and I feel it's a safe correction to the voting system.

Maybe for next year, before the nomination voting, there is a "For Your Consideration" page for people who want their comics in the Awards. They can PQ an ad to JNP or who ever runs the awards next year with a list of categories they want to be nominated for. That ad will be displayed for people to see.

This way, even if their great yet overzealous fans nominated them in every category, the organizers can easily eliminate them from categories the creator doesn't want to be in.

I wouldn't say limit the number of categories a comic can be in. I say let the creator's conscious be their guide. Naturally, if someone wants to be nominated for 40 awards, the peers will call them out on it.

For Mob Ties I had actually thumbed through the archive a bit and saw this big recurring cat looking guy and that for a time the main character was a furry. I guess I should have looked at more!

Geminni being in best strip and best story. To be honest I just overlooked that >_<
I removed several comics that didn't seem to fit for certain categories. I didn't just copy paste EVERY comic that had the most votes :P

Best Completed. AGH I didn't notice that Portland Express wasn't completed. I do see that he put that as one of the categories he suggested people to vote for him in. I wonder why he did that? The last page says "to be continued"

There are no excuses though. For the Best Completed I am going to remove Portland Express because it is NOT complete.

That means Imaginary Daughter takes its place. Which makes me very happy because I wanted that comic to be up for an award!


For Anthro, Strip, and Story I will be adding a 6th finalist.

For Anthro we have Bear vs Zombie

For strip we have Last Place Comics

For best story we have Portland Express (guess this makes up for it's removal!)

Looking through the community category again I discovered another vote just called Mafia. So I'll assume that was for the Drunk Duck Mafia which makes it break the tie with the other comics in that category.

And Geminni will be removed from the Adult category. Xolta was the only comic with enough votes to get past the huge tie point. But it has not updated since 3-29 :( So this category will only have 4 comics as well. Vickie just told me online about that one. Unless there is some other HUGE mistake I won't be altering any more.

At least there was a good week to catch this before judging started :)

Again I apologize for the mess. DAJB will be eating his words about everything being so smooth when he comes back haha XD

I do hope this makes people feel a bit better. I wouldn't just say "sorry you are screwed" if I made a mistake.
