They mentioned a bit more than just the name of the game when they confirmed the video and pics as being Sonic Unleashed. They also mentioned that the game won't be a side-scroller, but a full 3D game like the previous ones and that they were dumping more money and manpower into it than the previous games hoping to create something that played a little better. Whether this is a good or bad thing has yet to be seen. It would be nice if they stopped trying to make the generic platform game with "variety" and simply stuck to Sonic speeding through environments, but time will tell what the decide upon.
As for the RPG, I'm pretty sick of Bioware these days. While they really know how to make a dialog tree, I don't think I've liked any of the RPG systems outside of KOTOR. They are capable of making something good, but lately they haven't really been showing it when it comes to actual gameplay. With only screenshots at this point and very few details about the system, I'll wait until I see something more concrete before passing judgment.

According to gameplay video, that's only half true.
Not really, the gameplay video doesn't show anything the previous games didn't do. Even Sonic Adventure had chained areas that performed like they were on rails. And quite honestly, even the site you linked in your post states that Sega made a statement in response to the leaked screenshots and made is abundantly clear that the main goal of the development team was to make Sonic work in 3D.

First, we apologize for our fault to post those fake news about the Sonic plot and the confirmation that it would be 2D, gameplay-wise. However, we go on with our own new facts: SEGA is launching SONIC UNLEASHED with a HUGE production budget and it seems not only SONIC TEAM is involved but a very huge part of SEGA’s developer teams including those from Japan, the US and, apparently for the first time, even Europe. There seems to be one clear mission: Rebuild the Sonic brand and prove it could work in 3D environments. We also have one new artwork for you.
It's true that 3D environments don't automatically mean 3D gameplay, but why make a statement to debunk a rumor if the rumor is true? Quite honestly, the screenshots don't prove anything relating to the actual gameplay, that was just one site's guess as to how the game MIGHT play, not confirmation of anything. Then Sega came out and said no, that isn't right.

So the rumors I heard were that the game would alternate between portions that were 2D gameplay in a 3D world (like Rivals) and portions that you would steer like in Sonic and the Secret Rings. That leaked footage seems to support the idea, but I don't know what to believe.
I guess I don't care much either, other than the interesting notion that maybe they could fix a broken mascot. I've never been much of a fan of Sonic's type of gameplay, so I just like watching what happens with this.
That rumor stems from the filenames of the images that were linked. It's said that one of the images was meant to be shown in Play magazine, and another was meant to shown in Official Nintendo Magazine. So yeah, if that's true a Wii version is possible. Not at the level of graphics and resolution we're seeing now, but possible.

Rumors were tossed around that this was for the Wii.

So have you not watched the gameplay FOOOOOOTAAAAAAGE at all yet, because that shows the game playing in pseudo 3D/2D, with alternating 3D segments akin to Secret Rings.

Yes I have watched the footage and as I said before, they had segments like that in the Sonic Adventure games as well and those for the most part did not play like the 2D Sonic games. Before the first Sonic Adventure came out, the earliest footage they showed was composed almost entirely of shots from the on-rails segments in the game, so as I said before, the footage doesn't prove anything about how the game plays.

You make no sense. There are platforming segments in the trailer on stages that are too small for full 3D. Those segments are very obviously not "on rails" in the terms you're thinking of. Look, I wouldn't be as much of a dick if it weren't so obvious.

The majority of the video is on rails, it has three very short segments which aren't on rails (well, one is still questionable). You have some shots of the environment, then a longer on rails segment that ends with Sonic charging through some enemies (that's the questionable segment). Then you see him launch right back into on rails mode, drops out for all of two seconds to jump across three platforms, goes back into on rails mode, drops out for another three seconds as he jumps across a couple of platforms onto a bumper which brings him back into on rails mode for the rest of the video. The thickness of the platforms doesn't negate the posibility of a more 3D experience, it just shows that the level design in those places is geared towards speeding through those areas and getting back to the on rails portions of the stage.
Like I said before, Sega did similar things in the previous games and started out advertising the first Sonic Adventure by emphasizing the speed of the game by showing segments like this one. Also, as I said before, why would Sega come out and deny something if it was true rather than just give a "no comment"?

God now I know what it's like to be Shplane. I'm not going to argue how obvious something is anymore with you, it's just damn pointless, believe what you want and I'll just live with the knowledge that you're wrong. Sound good?

I object to this game on the grounds that every time I've played a Sonic game it's made me physically ill.
He's not bad in Brawl though, so MAYBE I'll give him another chance...

Yes I know that this game is retarded. It's also fun for some retarded reason.
This one is less retarded, but it's mostly just fun for the trolling

My main gripe with Sonic games is that even in their good, classic design they ran like this:
1. Run to the right
2. While running at high speed, get hit by an enemy you had no way of reacting to.
3. On your next life, jump over the enemy because this time you remember he's there.
You can replace "enemy" with "bottomless pit".
I enjoyed Sonic Rush, but mostly because of the boss fights.

yeah that happens to me a lot. enemies have a way to blend in to the background so you don't see them. i like the speed of the game though.
If anything bad happens,I'm blaming Global Warming.

Considering both Jade Empire and Mass Effect sucked, I'd rather they not foul up Phantasy Star, too.
