I was playing R-Type Final just to have fun as well as get ideas for a shooter I'm programming (starring various Drunkduck characters), but that's another thread.

I unlock the fighter known as "Cross the Rubicon" and I end up in a special stage. In this stage was a boss which looked familiar... it was the hero from R-Type Delta (released on the PS2 sometime ago). After blasting the tar out of him I did a bit of research. And I find this...

The enemy Bydo aliens that we've been fighting in the entire R-Type series happen to be humans and machines that have been converted into Bydo. They come to earth because they want to come home, but they don't realize that they've been converted. And in one of the endings for R-Type Final (the storyline where you have to take on R-Type Delta's hero who was also converted) YOU end up being converted into a Bydo yourself and end up having to fight both friends and foes. The ending quotes... "Why are only the seabirds happy to see me this midsummer night?" or something like that...

Any other games you know of where you think the storyline is messed up one way or another?

Killer7, No More Heroes, anything else Suda51 has been in charge of.

Edit: I just remembered PLanescape: Torment.
WARNING: *CONTAINS SPOILER* - Mouse over black box to read.
The Big Bad is actually the protagonists own mortality. There's a quest where you have to protect a sentient alley that's become pregnant and another where you have to travel into hell itself and talk a pillar built of the heads lawyers, sages, and accountants that lied while they were alive and are now forced to tell the truth to anyone who asks it of them.

Digital Devil Saga 2. After playing a silent protagonist so long, you come to find out what a completely malevolent person he was before the game began. That said, all the main characters find they are not who they portrayed themselves to be. It's pretty good.

If I'm bored out of my mind, is that akin to an out of body experience?

Oh god the TORMENT!!! I'd actually forgotten about alot of that, and to this day I'm still kickin myself for trading it off for Baldur's Gate 2 several years ago. Planescape Torment may have had a messed up story, but I SERIOUSLY wanna get it back. It was friggin' AWESOME!

...yeah...I don't actually have anything to contribute to the topic at hand...

Cool use of spoilers bro, I'm still on DDS1, glad I don't have to play 2 now :V

Really guys is

this hard to fucking understand? I can get it if it's in a thread exclusively for a game or movie, but a general spoilers thread makes not using it pretty unforgivable. Not everyone entering the thread has played every game, but may want to take part in the discussion for the ones they have. Morons.

I know I'm not a saint either when it comes to this, but at least make an effort.

Sorry my netiquette isn't up to your exacting invisible standards. Frickin' game has been out for four years already. I'm sure that one tiny aspect that didn't go into major details about the how's and why's has clearly ruined your gaming experience. If that's all it took to ruin it for you, then you probably never appreciated the game to begin with.

Also, Rosebud is the guy's sled.

There's also Robotech Battlecry. You play as the main character as the story is told from his perspective. After so many battles and after learning so much about the main character you get to your final battle and win, but...

WARNING: *CONTAINS SPOILER* - Mouse over black box to read.
...then he ends up dying. Not in glorious combat against impossible odds, but from being trapped in space and running out of oxygen and no chance of rescue. And that entire story you played through was the story he was telling as he looked death in the eye all that time.

I could've used spoiler tags for my R-Type final description, but the story isn't evident within the game unless you've also played R-Type Delta (I haven't).

In R-Type Delta if you chose a certain ship in that game you'll see what became of its pilot... the same pilot you end up fighting in R-Type Final once you've defeated the Battleship (stage 3.0) using the ship named "Crossing the Rubicon". You can check Youtube for videos of R-Type Delta's final stage, namely the ship called "Cerberus".

Wow... and I just found out that "Crossing the Rubicon" is a metaphor for deliberately going "past the point of no return"...

Super Mario Bros is pretty messed up. This short fat plumber gets whisked away into a fantasy world where there are giant evil mushrooms walking around and he jumps on their heads squishing the life from their bodies with the fatness of his ass. Because of this he wins the heart of a beautiful princess or maybe because he is one of the few humans in that world.

You forget the part that his brother, the only other human male on that planet, also wants a piece of that only human female on the planet.

So does a giant dinosaur turtle... want a piece. Maybe it already did.
