I noticed this when I put up a youtube video instead of a comic strip. The strip got 1000ish views that day, but the youtube vid only received 100ish. So is the counter multiplied by 10 to make us feel better about ourselves, or did only 1/10 visitors to my comic follow my clear and concise directions to view the youtube link I put in my comment section?
Note: I didn't embed the youtube video anywhere. People were instructed to copy/paste the link to it in my comment.
The views that DD reports are rounded to the nearest 10. However, it counts all page views, meaning if someone reads 5 pages of your archive, that's 5 page views. The counts can be a little off but not by too much.
A good percentage probably just didn't follow the link, though. People show up expecting a comic page, if there's anything different than that going on or different instructions (this happens with everyone), the visitors just don't do it. "Copy/paste a link AND sit through the video? ugh, he's asking too much!"
A lot of people just don't read the author's comments, too. :]
If you want to see more accurate readings, like unique pageviews, first-time visitors, and where in the world they are coming from, may I suggest StatCounter. It's a great tool, and it's free!
