This comic makes me think of http://www.dieselsweeties.com/ almost to the point of ripping it off, like it's too similar to say that it was Diesel Sweeties was just inspiration.
Personally I think this was a poor choice for a feature if only because it looks to be ripping off another comic. While it might not be the direct intention of G D...
...something just feels off about it. Like it's too close to diesel sweeties for it to be only an inspiration.
There's a big pixel-art community out there. diesel sweeties is the most popular, that's all. But it's just a single comic out of a multitude. NO ONE is ripping ANYONE off here just because they're box pixel art.
I've been reading diesel sweeties constantly for years. I've read every strip and there's nothing in the actual story or jokes like this comic, they're different sorts of scenarios.
Actually look at the font. It's the same thing. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this comic IS a rip off. You just don't have a comic in the same genre, same format (strip) and use the exact same font (http://www.kottke.org/plus/type/silkscreen/index.html*) and not be copying the source.
Too many things are similar...
Just way too many things for it to be that way without him having had Diesel Sweeties in mind when he made this.
-_- indeed.
*Especially seeing as how you can only really find this font through the Diesel Sweeties FAQ page or googling "Diesel Sweeties font". The font is too obscure for one to know outside of reading DS. As in, without having seen it used there before.
No. You're being totally silly.
I have read every single diesel sweeties strip and I know this is NOT a rip off. You, my friend, are being silly and obviously have limited experience with the vast diversity of webcomics that are out there.
Look, just because a comic uses a similar visual style and font means absolutely nothing AT ALL. If that meant a comic was ripping off another than every single manga and superhero comic would be illegal.
Sorry Larry, I'm sure your intentions are good and you're not a bad or vindictive person or anything, but you're being a crazy nutjob here. o_o

First off you don't know me at all so you can't say a word about how well I know webcomics.

Oh sure, the difference is that this comic uses the same obscure font, has similar characters, and to be honest the visual style is pretty unique, something that just isn't generic like say your typical manga OMG CHIBI or superhero muscle-fest.
It's too many things that are similar for this to not have borrowed heavily from DS.
"Larry" Said: Also I don't appreciate personal attacks. I'm entitled to my opinion and have every right to present the facts without being harassed by an admin.
First off I'm not harassing you. Although if you make more claims like that I just MIGHT.
Secondly, opinion is one thing, accusing a featured comic of being a rip-off is something else, and extremely rude to boot.
Thirdly, my criticising your bad behaviour is NOT a personal attack.
------------------------
In reality this sort of Pixel art comic is pretty much the same looking as many MS paint style comics. Most of these comics ALL use that font. This is idiotic and I'm locking this thread.
I wouldn't have, but because of your accusation against me the best thing to do is stop this in its tracks right NOW.
If you want to take this further, please either PQ Skoolmunkee directly, since she is the one who featured this comic, or contact the creator of diesel sweeties and ask him to weigh in for you.
I unlocked this just long enough to reply, I typed it all up and then Oz locked it and I didn't want to waste it. T_T
Why aren't you taking your criticisms to G_D, instead of making a passive aggressive attack against his comic in the forums?
I think the visual style looks similar because both creators opted for simplicity. You can only simplify humans so much before they all start to look the same. I'd say Moose Shoe's characters are actually more detailed and better looking than Diesel Sweeties'.
The argument that they have the same characters is a little weak. There's a girl character, a guy character, and a machine/robot- but Moose Shoe also has a ghost apple, a floating head with a HulkStache and strange tiger-face people. They're ensemble casts- and "girl, boy, and robot" is endemic to webcomics. Penny Arcade had DivX; CAD had that xbox thing; and about a thousand other comics have some kind of strange robot character. Who is ripping off who? If Moose Shoe wasn't a pixel art comic, you would never in a million years have compared it to Diesel Sweeties. The characters, other than being pixel art, aren't the same at all.
You also can't argue that a font is "obscure" when a massively popular webcomic uses it. It was probably chosen (in both instances) because it suits the comic style perfectly. If you are making a pixel comic you want to use a pixel-looking font- sprite comics with comic, serif, etc fonts just look stupid and bad. Maybe G_D did get the name of the font from diesel sweeties, or maybe he just went looking for a font that would fit. At any rate I don't feel that "he uses the same font, therefore he's ripping them off" is a valid argument in any way. Hundreds of webcomics use ACME from Blambot, are they all ripping each other off?
Regardless, you can still be influenced by something and make a completely different creation. If someone wants to make a good sprite comic, Diesel Sweeties isn't a bad role model.
I've had a couple people PQing me about this feature, which I welcome- but I think that debate about a sprite comic's worthiness is better in public, as long as people remain cool headed. :] (Oz, nutjob was a bit much maybe.) I'm wondering if any of these people who have issue with Moose Shoe being a feature have told any of their criticisms to GD or are just airing them elsewhere?
