Some of you may remember me from the Cowboys and Aliens II and Worlds at War projects. I've not been around too much since we took an extended hiatus on that stuff (though I'm hoping we will eventually get back to it), but I've been around and working!
For the last four or five years, I've been developing a huge, extremely ambitious project called Baeg Tobar (which may actually be familiar to some of you as I've posted about this on and off for that length of time). This is my baby - it's basically fantasy with a bit of steampunk mixed in. It involves an extremely massive world that we spent a lot of time creating and a huge number of writers and artists have spent fleshing out.
Anyway, we're gearing up to relaunch the project in October. We'll have an ongoing webcomic, short stories, novels, and various encyclopedic type entries and artwork for people to get to know the world better through reading. All of this will be tied to the central storyline (the webcomic) and will release as we progress through the storyline. We're also working on an RPG and an online game as well, so, we've got a lot of material coming together!
So, to get us ready for our relaunch in October, I thought I'd start by sharing some of the artwork we've been working on.
Here is the cover (when it's complete, we'll be including a logo on the left along with a small amount of teaser text) of the webcomic. I'll be posting more pages over the next few weeks as I complete them and get everything ready for launch. Scott Colby and Daniel Gooden are writing the story, Alan Gallo did the pencils, and I'll be doing the colors and letters.
Of course we would love to hear your feedback!

If you want to find out more about the project, you can head over to http://www.baegtobar.com. We have a blog and forum up right now.
Hey, this looks really really serious, the art is great and the world epic. I checked out the blog, your whole project is a lot like what we are trying to do with Weave, but on a larger scale (we only have a webcomic and some short stories I wrote)! Heh, wanna compare notes?
JerMohler Said: Absolutely, we could definitely get together and compare notes. How would you like to do that?
I guess by writing you a forum post or an email that would go somewhere along the lines of: "How exactly did you start with this whole thing and what did you do, step-by-step, to push this project forward, what goals did you set and how did you go about achieving them?"
Then I would probably have to disregard 90% of what your answer would be, because I live in Serbia. But, still it is worth knowing.
Then you could ask me the same. And I would tell you. I just don't think it would be useful to you, since you are a little further down the road with all this. So, yes - "comapare notes" was a joking euphemism for "tell me how you do it".
Sorry, I've been so swamped with work and preparation for the relaunch of Baeg Tobar, it's been difficult to find a little extra time for anything. Throw in getting recently married, and there is absolutely no time at all!
Anyway, wow, it's hard to tell where to begin. I've literally been working on Baeg Tobar since 2004. That is nearly five years. The project has gone through so many incarnations over the years.
Really, what I think it comes down to, is finding the right group of people. The idea of putting together a world in which to tell a variety of stories was my idea, but I knew a number of people - writers, artists, web designers - that were interested in contributing to a project like this. We began as three - we basically brainstormed and came up with a lot of material that we liked, then we pieced it all together into a huge bible (Resource Guide) for the world. This was the main thing because it provided a foundation for everything.
Once we had the Resource Guide for the world sorted out, we started looking for other artists and writers who might like the concepts and would like to tell stories set in the world. Over the years, many people have contributed to the project. We've literally got hundreds of pieces of artwork as well as a several completed novels and a myriad of short stories.
However, even with all the interest and participation, we launched three separate times without being able to maintain the site. That pretty much makes up the first three years of work on this.
In 2007, I met a fellow out at Wizard World Chicago named Matt Jacobs. He had a lot of similar ideas and a good number of connections. We sat down and started talking and decided to create a company (Outland Entertainment) where we could publish this material and other online content. We put together a business, got a license, found a little bit of start up capital, and here we are.
For me, it's been a matter of being persistent. There were many times when this whole thing could have just faded away into the background. But, I've kept working on it, even when nobody else was. Also, it's worthwhile to just go ahead and spend the money to pay for consistency. Nobody working for free can maintain a regular schedule, unless this it is their own project. If you want to see your project succeed, suck it up and put the money into it. Of course, ask me about that again in a year - we'll see what I have to say then.
Not sure that helps much! If you had more specific questions, let me know!
In the meantime, more art!

And here's the cover to Chapter one. Lines by Alan Gallo, Colors by me.
So, we're launched and online, finally. Which means you can actually go read the story at http://www.baegtobar.com. Just click on that "webcomic" link on the left.
That also means I have more art to put up here to show a little bit more of the process. Here's the next page -

I thought I might also throw up the actual finished cover (with title and credits) as well.
There is also a myriad of other material to be found over at the website. Please, check it out and let us know what you think!
We're actually updating the webcomic itself every Monday. But, we've got a bundle of other material we're updating weekly as well. Every other Wednesday we'll either have a Resource Guide or blog update. And every other Friday we'll have either a short story or novel chapter update. Everything will be illustrated in full color.
Here's the next page. We get to delve into the recesses of Boruin's mind. Seems remarkably like a library...heh. Anyway, hope you dig the artwork as we move along on this!
