This be a t-shirt I'm designing for my coffeeshop gig. I was told to draw "a fairy riding a bat". I am frightened and shocked at how much it reminds me of "Fern Gully".
Eh, if you're told to draw a fairy and a bat it's gotta be tough to avoid comparisons to Fern Gully.
Yeah, it does remind me a little Fern Gully too, the fairy's face and hair is classic Hyena though.
oh man when I read the subject line "Hyena Hell does 'cute'" I cringed (expecting some sort of starry-eyed roadkill squirrel or something) but it really is legitimately cute!! awww.
I like it. :] It is cute (I'm surprised anyone can make bats look cute, horrid things) but it doesn't look 'young' because you've made the fairy pretty 'adult' (so to speak). She is showing a lot of skin but I think it's mostly her face, because you haven't done her like a kid's cartoon character- she has a realistic face.
I really like the fairy's hair, how it's solid black. It stands out. Would other parts of the drawing look any good as solid black you think?
The problem with making too much of it solid black, for me, was I have no idea how it's going to be printed as a shirt. So I tried to balance the solids as best I could without making them too predominant... Ick, I dunno! It's been so long since I had to rely just on black and white (no linework for tone) that it was pretty tricky for me.
I think I like it more with less black... or at least, I prefer the outfit being white. The bat would look best (to me) colored in purple with black lines rather than black with white lines.

You have no idea how cool it is to find another artist who prefers realistic figures on women by default instead of "Aw, do I have to?!" Awesome design!

Here's the finished second design:
Of course ya can guess which one I prefer.
If anyone seriously wants a shirt, I'll resurrect this thread when they get printed.
The first one is good and all... But the second one rocks. I love its perspective and the fairy's expression... It really looks like you were much more comfortable doing it the second time around (that's what she said, wakawakawaka!)
Khm, sorry about that. Anyways, I want to see the photo of the t-shirt when its done!
@dueeast: Yeah, I tend to think the female figure is fine on its own merit without exaggeration.
@mehighlow: The second one was definitely more my style! But I think the first one translates graphically better as a t-shirt design. Besides- marketing, man. Give the people a choice.
