I was thinking of some new things to add to the awards this time around and this seemed like a fun idea. All the nominees would be encouraged to draw out acceptance speech comics for themselves and turn them into amanda before the winners are announced; then posted with the DD award page when it finally goes up. These could be as long, short, and crazy as they want. If it became an official part of the DD awards and was expected from nominees most of them would probably do it (I know I would have). And don't you think it'd make those DD awards pages all the more fun to read?
It's a nice idea but asking nominees (rather than just winners) to submit a comic could be very onerous for some. I seem to remember some comics being nominated in almost every category last year. Surely they wouldn't be expected to submit a comic for every category in which they were nominated, when only one or two of them might ever be used?
People who wanted to prepare special comics last year did, and I'm sure they will do again. I posted mine with my own comic as did many others. I'm sure they'd all have been willing to make them available to Amanda if they'd been asked but I see it as an issue for the winners only, not for all the nominees.

If it's too much of a burden for some, they don't have to do it. But I think a lot if not most of the people who were nominated only got nominated for one or two things. And there's no need to be inflexible and say that people have to create a sprawling, professional comic for every category they're nominated for. People are free to do as much or as little as they please. If I were one of these people nominated for everything I'd only make two comics: one a legitimate one for the first win, and another that just says something like "thanks again suckers!" for all the rest. Just saying, if you don't feel like doing a lot, you don't have to.

I'm sure they did, but I didn't see a single one of them, because they didn't appear on the DD awards page. Even if they were posted on the award page later, I still wouldn't of seen them, because I never went back and reread those reward pages after the fact (and I doubt I'm alone in that respect). The benefit of doing it for nominees is that they are completely integrated into the awards, and thus more people will see the acceptance comic itself (people outside the comic's fanbase), it'll make the awards themselves more fun, and it will make the whole experience feel more like an award show.
I see no harm in asking the nominees to do it. If they don't want to for whatever reason, if they only want to do a comic after they've won, that's fine. We've lost absolutely nothing if they say no. But I suspect most would enjoy doing it and the result is a better awards show.
I like the idea, so I'd say mention it and hint strongly that it's an option to let people get the idea that it would fun and awesome of them to do so, but not actually going straight out and asking people to do it. That way, more people should think about it, and we can post the ones that do a comic, but it won't be required and we don't have to worry about it if it doesn't happen.
Maybe asking was the wrong word to use. I pretty much agree with what you say. If I were in charge of it, I'd send PQs to all the nominees and say something like: "Hey, we're trying to do this thing. It's entirely voluntary and you can put as much or as little effort into it as you like, but we think it'd be fun and awesome if lots of nominees turned something out." Yada yada yada.
Ha! That is a neat idea. I think it would be a lot of fun. I don't think it would be too hard for people nominated multiple times to reuse the same nomination speech and just change the name of the award. Sure, not quite as exciting after the fifth read through, but easier on the artists

Actually, I just thought of something kind of funny.
You could have other people do acceptance speeches saying "So and So really wanted to be here this evening but was unable to attend, so we will be accepting this award on his or her behalf."
I like the idea, but I don't think we need anything structured or mandatory.
Just put up an open announcement that if any winners (even finalists) make an acceptance or appreciation comic/graphic, they can send it in to be "officially" posted after the awards ceremony. A lot of people made them last year and posted them on their own comics. We just didn't post them in the official awards comic. It would've been cool to have them all collected in one place, and I don't think it'd be hard to do that. You just have to let people know they *can* submit those things to be posted after the awards.
(You can give a reasonable deadline for anyone interested -- one or two weeks maybe? Or leave it open-ended and post them as they are sent.)

My comics are about knives, rats, and rats with knives.

Agreed. If I'm hearing it right, that seems to be the idea so far.
I like the idea of nomination acceptance comics. Looks like a win-win to me. We get to enjoy the acceptance speeches, creators who have the time to put something together get a bit more exposure than otherwise.

I'm interested in this idea. I like Exzachly's idea of PQing the nominees, and then we all PQ you our acceptance speech (or send a link to it). I think it would be cool to do this before the winners are announced so you can go ahead and use their acceptance speech during the ceremony thingy. ...If you don't get PQs from everyone, you could stick up a "so and so couldn't make it to the ceremony today, etc." like zaymac suggested. I can draw this one if no one else has volunteered yet.
Anyway I would love to see this idea go through. It sounds like fun!
Yes, go ahead and make your acceptance speech comics. If you win, I'll make sure that the page follows your winning announcement. If you don't win, we can put the comic AFTER the awards pages are finished being announced.
I'll be helping Amanda put them up. Since she is collecting the presentations go ahead and send these comics to me.
EDIT: You do NOT have to make an acceptance comic.
If we make one after the awards are announced, would that be able to be posted later? I mean, if I put effort into something I wasn't going to actually win, I'd just feel foolish and like I wasted a lot of time and effort (and even MORE foolish if that picture was posted). And yet if I happen to somehow win something, I'd definitely want to make something special.
It seems like a lot of effort for a long shot, but it'd be nice if people could have their acceptance/thank-yous collected somewhere rather than just on their own comics (as last year).

I don't see that being an issue. Only problem is that it will be posted AFTER the awards are over and may not be seen by as many people. But, yup, if you want to make one AFTER you know you have won or not that is fine.
You can also tell me if you do not want your comic posted in the event you don't win (for whatever reason) Hey, we love options ^_^

If other people do it that way, they'll probably check in again. Either way, I'll just wait.
I'm definitely not betting on getting any awards, so it would feel like tossing a couple hundred dollars into an empty slot machine. Maybe I'll draw a concession speech instead. Could we post that?
Just joking. (You know how I love to heckle you.) I'm swamped with work until the end of August, so I definitely won't be drawing anything I haven't already committed to. I probably will draw something fun after the awards for my fans, though.

I will draw one, but I was planning to wait till after I found out if I had won anything.
I feel like a goof writing a speech for an award if I don't get it!
