It depends, are we considering foreign films too? Because if so Pan's Labyrinth was prob the best one I've seen that was made in the last 5 years. I'll think of others though.

That's too relative a question. I could probably think of several movies and TV shows from the past five years that I've loved, but it would be too open to argument.

This argument that everything today sucks is ridiculous. the world has always had bad movies, just no one remembers them if they are old, they get forgotten because they weren't worth remembering, everyone just remembers the classics.
There are plenty of movies today that don't suck, I think it would be easier to just list the movies that do suck.

Everything has always sucked, people just tend to remember the rare things that didn't. Or, of course, the slightly less rare things that sucked so badly they actually gave people brain damage.

Pan's Labyrinth was a beautiful movie.

Also, The Wrestler was really great. It could be because Im a huge wrestling fan, but that was a terrific movie.

I can think of a few that I considered genuinely well made and enjoyable films. I think the better comedies came out in the 80's, but that's me.

It's tritely fashionable to be disdainful of random things these days.

Thought for the week:
If I'm bored out of my mind, is that akin to an out of body experience?

Totally agree with both of those.

But RE: "The Wrestler"- I too am a HUGE indie wrestling fan (I do a 26 hr round trip every year for one particular tournament), and a lot of the guys I go watch were extras in that movie. But my enthusiasm for the content aside, I thought it was an excellent film.

My submission: "No Country For Old Men".

dude, you never get out.
your currently still trying to get through the bootleg stash your sis hooked you up with.
am I right?

Just as skool poited out there are plenty of great movies which have come out in the last 5 years. My question for lothar and others who tend to agree with him is what do they consider a great movie?

We all have varying tastes to say the least. And its hard recommend a movie with not knowing what someone considers good.

I thought Crash was an excellent movie in the last five years. came out in 2004... that's on the cusp.

It's kinda hard to argue against this when a crappy movie like Fast and Furious made 72.5 million on it's opening weekend. There are a lot of Crappy movies but there are still a few good ones every now and then.

skoolmonkee has made a pretty excellent list! I agree with all the movies on there that I've seen.

I think what's been more of a disappointment for me recently isn't actual movies that have been released but movies that are getting awards. I feel like the academy awards are going down the toilet with very few exceptions. Anyone agree?

There are definitely still some good movies these days, but what I think have really gone downhill are comedies. There are still some good ones, but I find they almost all follow the same horrible pattern...really funny beginning, a large part where there's a depressing conflict and very few laughs, and a "cute" ending.
Why can't a conflict be funny these days? I go to a comedy purely for laughs, I don't care if the plotline isn't amazing and there isn't a serious bit.

Oh, and I agree about the awards thing. I hated Benjamin Button. I couldn't believe I sat there for 3 hours waiting for that old woman to die.

The only film I can think of is Once... and if you like Once I recommend Flight of the Conchords Season 1 and 2... and if you like FotC I recommend you become my best friend immediately.

Pretty much

Eh, I look at what's on in the cinemas and nothing really interests me that much... So I can't be bothered seeing it on DVD either.

The last film I saw was "Eat, For This is My Body" -an art-house French film about the plight of post colonial Haiti and the dichotomy it faces reconciling the developing, evolving native culture with that of the remnants of old French imperialism.

It was painful. But pretty at times... and even a bit funky. The only films I've really seen in the cinema have been art-house since that's the crowd I hang with and I just can't was the same old generic Hollywood stuff anymore. -Unless forced into it.
------------

Let's see, I did see anchcorman on DVD a couple of years ago and didn't think much of it. It was crude.
I saw Dodgeball. That was sad. But the play on the "good poor team of losers VS the bad wealthy team of winners" them was handled in avery knowing way, which it had to be, but I still appreciated it.
I loved "The life Aquatic with Steve Zissou".
aaaand "Don't Mess with the Zohan" was a very funny movie.
-Thanks to my sister for the kast one.

Burn After Reading was also quite an enjoyable movie...

What about Gran Torino? I have heard some good comments about that...

There was a lot of good movies in the past five years:

(some of the movies who are not in english can be seen with subtitles)

From Quebec:

- C.R.A.Z.Y
- Congorama
- La rage de l'ange
- Continental, un film sans fusil
- L'Âge des ténèbres
- Les 3 p'tits cochons (nothing to do with a children tale XD)
- Le Ring
- Borderline
- Dans une galaxie près de chez vous 2
- C'est pas moi, je le jure!
- Babine
- Polytechnique
- Le peuple invisible

From France:

- De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté
- Kirikou et les bêtes sauvages (animated kid movie)
- La Marche de l'empereur (beautifull documentary)
- La Graine et le Mulet
- Molière
- Le Scaphandre et le papillon

From Canada (except Quebec):

- Shake Hands with the Devil

From Israel:

- Bikur Ha-Tizmoret (really funny and bright)

All of thoses are awesome movies.

46-Okunen no Koi
Brilliant movie, one of my favorites.

And anyone that claims that there aren't any good movies these days just doesn't like new audiovisual technology. I know lots of people on this forum look more at the storytelling than the audiovisuel aspects of film, but visually movies tend to be brilliant the past years, you just have to know which ones to watch.

Oh man, big bang love... ugh. no offense, I could NOT sit through all those CGI butterflies.
And Crash? ...ok I'll just annoy ppl if I pan your movie choices. (But Crash & Slumdog Millionaire are two of the worst movies I've seen. I enjoyed Twilight more. And that's sayin' something.)

Here's my list:

Let The Right One In
Adventureland
Wall-E
Goodbye Lenin
The Orphanage
La Vie En Rose
Coraline
The Wrestler
There Will Be Blood
Milk
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Art School Confidential
Broken Flowers
Motorcycle Diaries
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (might be older?)
LOTR?
Breakfast on Pluto
The Squid & the Whale
Howl's Moving Castle
Thumbsucker
Oldboy
The Dying Gaul
The Incredibles
Sideways
The Life Aquatic
Darjeeling Limited
I heart Huckabees
Coffee & Cigarettes
Nacho Libre
Once
The Pool
V for Vendetta
Little Miss Sunshine
Pan's Labyrinth
Children of Men
Marie Antoinette
Volver
American Dreamz (don't ask why, I own this movie)
Superbad
Enchanted
Grindhouse
Into The Wild
The Wind that Shakes the Barley
Paprika
The Page Turner
The Dark Knight
Iron Man
Diving Bell & the Butterfly
HSM3
In Bruges
Mongol
Hamlet 2
Funny Games
EDIT: OMG The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

These are all great movies; some are awe-inspiring. Anyone who hasn't seen a good movie in the past 5 years should really be watching more movies. (Of course, I am a movie geek...)
If you can't tell, I gravitate towards slow-paced, mopey movies. so emo...
