So when you dial a number on a phone then hear the line ring what's a good sound for that? I've heard that sound often enough I just can't think of a good way to indicate it in a comic.
I don't think modern phones ring any more. We all associate it with ringing because that's what it used to do, but nowadays it's just an electronic boooop... boooop... type of noise. (However that's confusing, with the different boop-boop that means busy signal). Kind of strange to think about how we haven't mentally caught up with a different sound yet.

Probably because most modern cell phones use ringtones.
And if you were to use that, I'd suggest a zig-zag tail on the bubble, maybe make the bubble itself square. And then some kind of techno-ish font, but make it italized for the lyrics.
I drew a sequence a while back with a cellphone ringing, and felt sooooo weird doing the ring tone- I was afraid it would just read as random music/lyrics coming from somewhere in the room, and that the phone just kinda happened to be there in the foreground. So I made it go "Bzzz bzzz" on the table, and drew little "shaking" lines- like she'd set it on vibrate as well.
But if you're listening to a phone ring (like you're waitin' for someone to pick up on the other line), I think usually it still "rings". Although my sister-in-law's got some weird thing where it plays a song, and I'm always like- WTF, am I on hold?
