Someone on Twitter just began speculating what music various DC/Marvel comic characters might listen to. Which started me thinking ... what music would the characters from your own comic like? Give reasons if you can!
For my comic, Shades, I decided the tastes of the principal characters would probably be as follows:
Boudicca
As a wild-haired warrior queen, I think Boo would probably be into 1980s power ballads: Tina Turner, Bonnie Tyler, Cher etc. Maybe it's just because of the big hair but I could see her leaping into action with "Simply the Best" pounding out in the background!
Doug/Spitfire
Doug's very much a man of his times. As a veteran of WW2, therefore, I could see him listening to Glenn Miller, "In the Mood" blaring out even as he engaged the enemy in an aerial dogfight. He might even be inclined to fly his plane off into the mists, to see if he could find the blighter!
The Shaman
Definitely nothing mainstream. It would have to be something vaguely mystical and haunting (for obvious reasons!) One of the stranger CDs in my collection is an album called "Sacred Spirits: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans", a collection of remixed versions of ... well, the title says it all really. I could see him listening to that on his headphones!
Stanley Miller
Like Doug, Stan's a man of his time, so probably late 1950s early 1960s (pre-Beatles) rock and roll: Buddy Holly would be there but so would the UK's pale imitations of the US originals - people like Adam Faith, Billy Fury etc.
Ryan/Harrier
19 years old, headstrong and rash, Ryan could be into heavier rock or maybe something frenetic like the Prodigy. In a mellower moment he might even deign to listen to Oasis (but I'm less convinced about that - too boring!)
Craig/Spyder
18 years old and very much the intellectual of the group. I'm sure when he's working on one of the team's various pieces of equipment he'd have something quite interesting playing in the background to inspire his own creativity. Maybe Blur, maybe Radiohead or Muse.
Becky/Gale Force
17 years old, I have a horrible suspicion she'd be into the likes of Girls Aloud or the Pussycat Dolls, with maybe a sneaking admiration for Madonna.
Surrealist
She's comes from an Art School type background. I'd imagine her listening to some punk spirited stuff. Having mellowed a bit I'd guess she'd also have a lot of "this is just great stuff" on her ipod as well. Here's a sampling:
Ramones. The Specials. Sam Cook. The Clash. Aretha Franklin. Talking Heads. Queen. Social Distortion.
Sara used to be a raver of sorts during her teens few years ago, these days she's probably into edgier, punkier electronics.
Din is shown in one pic (which is a photo from years ago) wearing a tshirt saying "zero null", which was a name of my noise project. Thus I'd say he listens to heavier, experimental music.
Sara's sister, Lena (who will appear in the sequel) is most likely listening to Metal.
Sara's father (who pops up in a flashback sequence) is most likely a fan of jazz or blues.
Not sure what the bad guys listen to. The cries of their victims? Sounds of disemboweling? No idea :D
Millennium's characters exist in a very young fantasy world, and they're all quite fond of tribal music for some reason, even though only one of its main characters is from an actual tribe, lol. :D
As for Lovefeast's, well, they all came from the "real world", so I can actually say what some of them like!
Chains: Has a wide range of tastes, from rock to disco to modern video game music. Probably close to my own tastes. Huge fan of the Pillows, Buck-Tick, Porno Graffiti, Dance*Man, and Sparta Locals.
(And his former boyfriend had extremely bipolar tastes in everything - it either had to be incredibly cute, lighthearted bubblegum pop or loud, screamy rock/metal and other weird stuff. Think MYV, Natsumen, System of a Down, uhh... some other examples I forgot 'cause I don't listen to that stuff much.)
Eustace: Actually, I don't think he listens to music much. But he'd probably appreciate lyricless/classical music. Maybe classical guitar.
Hibiku: A fan of pop music, but wouldn't tell you.
Emblem: Alt. rock to get pumped, post-rock to relax. Would probably listen to Sigur Ros, except he hasn't heard of them.

The imeem playlists there are pretty close to Chains's tastes in music, esp. the first. :D
Most of my characters aren't from, uh, "our world". But I'll take a stab at what they'd listen to if they were:
Victor's a punk guy. He was in a band called "The Vapid Hoopleheads" before he ended up in the Hub. It was not a very good band. His favorites: Dead Milkmen, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, The Queers, Ramones. Probably a bit of metal, too. AC/DC for sure. Oh, and Mojo Nixon. The shirt he wears is supposed to be a Dead Milkmen shirt- I drew it on the cover of the first issue, but opted out of the pain it would be to draw it like, every panel.
Pete would be an indie rock kinda guy. I don't actually know any indie rock bands. I imagine it'd be the kind of bands mentioned in "Questionable Content".
Cutter's wearing a Pogues shirt in the X-mas filler page. He pretty much could've walked out of a Pogues song, for that matter. Probably Tom Waits, and all 3 Hank Williams. I don't see him as the kind of guy who would actually buy records- mostly he'd play songs about drinkin' on the jukebox in the bar. For some reason I think he'd like Iggy Pop too, although it's a bit uncharacteristic.
Calamity: Something along the lines of My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult; the Cramps; B-52's; Talking Heads; the Police. I think she'd secretly love 80's era Madonna, too.
Luis-seeing as hes based on me, hed have the same tastes as me. Curtis-all about the 70's disco ballads...the "shaft" theme would be his intro music. Chen-everybody was kung fu fighting. Hasegawa-anything from the 50s-y'know, when men were men. hasegawa's son-Linkin park, because hes all hurt and deep and emotional and raging and shit, yknow?
"Kung Fu Komix IS...hardcore martial art action all the way. 8/10" -Harkovast
"Kung Fu Komix is that rare comic that is made with heart and love of the medium, and it delivers" -Zenstrive
"Kung Fu Komix is...so awesome" -threeeyeswurm
"Kung Fu Komix is..told with all the stupid exuberance of the genre it parodies" -The Real Macabre
TPCTH: It takes place super far into the future so I don't have any exact group to put up.
Pepe/Nameless: Pepe actually has a secret love for music. He has thousands of music files on his computer on the spaceship. The society forbids musical interments(they only allow digital sounds and singing), so that is part of the reason why Pepe is so interested in Starla's recorder. For specific tastes I think he'll listen to almost anything except little kids' music.
Starla and Scout haven't been exposed to much music so it's hard to say what kind of music they like.
Demon Eater: I'm going to make up some bands and musicians for DE if I ever get to that story arc. One band is the Demon Eaters, a heavy metal band.
Saturno: Saturno never does get into music because s/he had been deaf throughout most of her/his life. Saturno can't dance or sing either, much to his/her friends annoyance.
Jack likes The Doors, Topaz likes The Who, Orlock likes screams. XP
I can't really give in-depth reasoning, I just think they would. (Except Orlock, he's just freakin' evil.)
Both Bonesy and Puke are thrashers for sure!but i'd probably have to say Razor is Bones pick of the litter.[after all he never changes that gnarly old fuckin shirt!]
he also recommends you listen to this.
There's really only two characters of mine that have made their musical tastes apparent. In a filler comic I made Creature sings Pat Benetar and in War of the Bands Madeline has a Sleater-Kinney sticker on her car's dashboard.
For some reason I get the idea that Higgins would like Stravinsky and Bach and that Cricket would like This Bike is a Pipe Bomb and Blondie.
Ok, from my comic Wolf, the list would be as follows:
Zoe would have two taste categories: for when she is researching, she'd listen to silly, high-pitched singer and odd music combos, like Aqua, and N'Sync. For easy listening or when she's actually listening to music, she'd go for movie soundtracks, some rock music and anything with good use of the electric guitar.
David would go for classical music, and fusion music- anything that has references to classical music and uses beat, folk music, and strings music. So he'd listen from anything to the classics (Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, etc) to Bond, Vanessa Mae and Joshua Bell
Mike would listen to everything that is even remotely rock, and would consider balads to be his tribute to classical music. XD
Edith and Jane would listen to whatever's popular.
Finst would listen to Bach and some jazz, I bet. Not sure why, but that's how he strikes me.
The main character of my strip, Harry Bongelola, is a classical music snob who has trouble identifying with any music that's not either classical (Beethoven, Mozart) or very good artsy rock (Talking Heads, Elvis Costello). Anything else is just trash (to him).
Musical taste and critique is central to the plot/jokes/humor of my strip.
The two principal characters from my comic The Optimist:
Jadwiga-- punk music, as already mentioned. Sex Pistols! She's a rebel, and loves Western-alt things.
Kazimieras-- hymns! That's the easy answer. He's also a fan of anything soft and melancholy, Lithuanian traditional folk songs. If he were more aware of music from other parts, he'd be a Belle & Sebastian fan, for sure. (although B&S weren't around when my story takes place...)
Monkeyshine is at a very early stage right now but I can reveal that at some point Joel will be singing along with Meatloaf while hitting things wtih a pole. He's a power-balad kind of guy.
Most of the other characters are cats, but I'm sure they're partial to a bit of latenight-sitting-on-a-fence-and-screetching.
Interesting topic, actually... I've actually set up a playlist for all six Punks, an idea I got from my sister, so I already have a set for each.
Bast - Classical music, like Bach and Beethoven, and light modern music such as Jars of Clay's "Flood".
Tenkyo - Tenkyo would listen to music a bit more on the saucier side - Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (I think that's the right order of the title) and Tenacious D's "Fuck Her Gently" are among her playlist.
Bebe - Bubbly J-Pop, what else? Mottoeke! Sailor Fuku (Lucky Star opening theme) and Caramelldansen are among the highlights of Bebe's playlist.
Deedee - Hard rock, with a touch of emo. Deedee listens to Rob Zombie and Linkin Park, to name a few.
Telloh - Yes, even the psychotic android has her own playlist. Telloh's list includes the Portal classic Still Alive, and Pink Floyd's Flaming.
Tellori - Schweine and You Couldn't Be Me. I forget the artists for those songs...
