I uploaded a pic for my comic banner on my comic's page but it still only displays in normal text...

Usually new banners take a while to show up.

Try waiting at the very least a day or two. If it still hasn't changed by then, you can file a bug report.

You needed the code in there to make it show up: <!--[COMIC_NAME_IMAGE]-->

I put it in there for you
If you were using one of the pre-made templates it would have been there right away because those already have the code in them, but the default templates don't.
