Yes, that IS what he said. And YES, just SHOWING THE SOLES OF YOUR SHOES to an other person is a high insult in Iraq. You can imagine what THROWING one at someone means.

Not that it matters. Bush didn't think anything of it. He sloughed it off and said "So what if the guy threw a shoe at me?" pretty much showing that he didn't know the high insult he was given. I doubt he'll even take any of the comments into consideration. He never has before. OF COURSE not everyone feels that way. But a LOT of people in Iraq do despite Bush and his cronies saying otherwise. As President, and the man that started this war, Bush is responsible for the death of thousands (many even innocent) lives. That is the price you pay when you wage war. But I personally do not think he ever gives it another thought.

It is an insult in the entire Arabic speaking world.(at least according to all that Arab acculturation stuff I studied back in the day) The only way a greater insult could have been delivered is if the thrower had tossed the shoe with his left hand. Of course throwing shoes (or banging them on desktops) is no big deal as far as US Presidents are concerned.

It is a great send-off for a president who started a war, nearly lost it and then finally figured out he could win it but only after everything had gone on entirely too long.
